I want to mount speakers in the cockpit. I am not sure what would be the best location. The foot well walls or the coaming just behind the storage compartments. I am opting for the coaming but not sure if it will affect the integrity of the coaming. We sometimes sleep out in the cockpit with plywood over the foot well to make into a large bed and watch a movie on a DVD player running the sound through the am-fm radio. Putting them in the foot well would hinder the sound. What do ya think?
I wouldn't think that the combing would be adversely affected, but there is another problem. I have mine at the back of the cockpit on the combing and opening the lazarette, and fuel locker is a pain. The speaker grill sticks out enough that the locker doors will not stay up, or open all the way. I am in the process of trying to find flatter grills that will still protect the speakers and also let the doors open fully. My opinion is to stay away from the area just above any of the cockpit locker doors.
BTW: We also have a 1985 standard rig. So we are comparing apples to apples.
We mounted speakers on the main bulkhead pointing aft toward the companionway and have found that they provide excellent sound for the cabin and quite sufficient sound to the cockpit. Mind you, I'm not a high volume audiophile. Others have mounted speakers on the stern pulpit, even making them removable for storage/bad weather.
Poly Planrs on 82, sorry for terrible photo, coaming placement creates base reflex acoustics which make small speakers sound wonderful. I had to go with much larger rail mount speakers and they still did not have the sound of the coaming speakers.
I've got Franks boat now and really like the stern rail mounted speakers. I sure there is a lot of cleaner instalations but these provide great sound, all the way up to the bow. Frank had sunbrella covers made for the speakers and the sound is still good. No problems with weather and easy to remove and lock up.
Someone else on here posted a hatchboard with speakers mounted in it. I really liked that Idea, and plan to copy it. You want music inside the boat?? put in the hatchboard. You want outside music? Flip it around facing the cockpit.
I've never liked having anything above decks that might interfere with sailing or that looks like it could easily be unscrewed and carried away, so I have a set of mini bookshelf speakers below that fit just behind the settees on either side. The cords are long enough that they can be set on the cabin top, just inside the grab rails, which is where they often sit when the boat is at anchor. From the top of the boat they can easily be heard when we are in the water swimming.
The cockpit is too small and there's enough hardware up there already. I keep about 10 feet of speaker wire on each speaker so I can put'em where I want them, and when I'm done I put'em away
Wow - Dave, I like the port hole above your quarter berth. Is that something you added? We actually use our quarter berth for two of our little kids to sleep in, and the problem is that there is no ventilation down there. I was going to add a fan, but I like the light a port hole offers!
