We pulled the boat the day after Thanksgiving last year, and as most of you know, Rita broke her heel in the process. Thanks to everyone for their kind notes & thoughts. I've spent the last eight months working on the boat when I had time and we weren't renovating the house, nursing broken bones, nursing our dog after major surgery, entertaining guests, etc. Here are most of the projects we worked on over the ensuing months, I'm sure I've left out a couple:
<ul> <li>New VHF antenna and coax through mast, ran two pull strings, one inside the conduit, one outside. Added rubber grommets at all entry & exit points. Also replaced all the coax in the cabin so it's completely hidden till it exits at the:</li> <li>New Uniden 525 VHF radio with WHAMx4 microphone. Which is connected to: </li> <li>New Garmin GPSMap 276c, which is also connected to: </li> <li>New Raymarine ST1000+ autopilot. </li> <li>Replaced entire charging circuit that was burnt by PO. Added a Sunsei solar panel controller, and ran all 12 gauge tinned wire for every run. Added 12VDC power receptacle on the inside face of the rounddown, and pulled extra pull string from breaker panel to battery compartment. </li> <li>New 2008 Tohatsu 9.8 XLS mounted on: </li> <li>New Garelick extension bracket and connected to: </li> <li>New Power Tiller remote throttle & shifter engine controls with remote start & kill, which is mounted on: </li> <li>Refinished tiller </li> <li>New Rule 2000 GPH bilge pump with float switch & remote Manual/Automatic switch, with complete hose run & new throughhull next to original manual one. </li> <li>Removed 75# of sand in bow and replaced with 200# of lead to counterbalance new, heavier, engine mounted further back. </li> <li>Fixed broken catch on galley door </li> <li>Rewired trailer lights with new LED lights. </li> <li>Rewired several circuits in the breaker panel that I didn't like the look of. Also rewired two 12 VDC receptacles, one in the battery compartment panel, another in the transverse tunnel above the table. </li> <li>Removed king post, epoxied hole through deck, resealed with 4200 (and discovered it still leaks last week after the monsoon rains...grrr...) </li> <li>Mounted new AR-3 bow anchor roller. </li> <li>Mounted dock roller on custom made steel bracket made by my blacksmith friend Christian. </li> <li>Removed & washed all the cushion covers, and then water proofed them. I found it really makes a difference in how the cushions fit if the daughter of a seamstress fits them for you. Rita did a really nice job getting the cushion covers back on with all the seams aligned perfectly. Nice. </li> <li>General scrubbing, vacuuming, etc. Not exactly projects, but needs to be done. </li> <li>New trailer jack</li> <li>New spare tire and fifth wheel bearing mount</li> <li>Partial replacement of the trailer pads. I discovered two of them were falling apart (last two on the trailer), so I replaced them, now that the boat's in the water, I can replace the other four.</li> </ul>
Best new tool: Harbor Freight ratcheting wire crimper. Priceless, don't make an electrical connection without it.
Most useless item purchased: Sea Dog deck connectors. Worthless crap, they should be ashamed.
Most fun project: Mounting the new engine on the bracket. Lots of interesting things to consider, and it worked out really nicely. The biggest problem with this project is that I never expected to have to do it. Tohatsu's shifter configuration changed from the descriptions of other folks on this site for their earlier year models, and with the change, didn't fit in the transom of our boat. So I had to scramble for the bracket & how to get it and the engine mounted.
Hardest project to finish: Getting the GPS hooked up to the VHF & autopilot. I just couldn't seem to get myself motivated to do this, and when I did, it was tedious, millions of tiny wire connections, plus I didn't completely understand what needed to be done to make it happen. However, once I figured it out, it went pretty quickly, and I'm really glad it's done. Now I just need to get DSC license done through the FCC.
