Is the core of the rudder on my '89 wood or some type of plastic? I noticed when I had it off a couple of weeks ago that the very bottom of it is scraped up, possibly through the outer shell.
It's not too bad, I just want to repair it before it gets worse if it has the wood core. What do I repair it with, fiberglass?
Gary, our boats came with the new balanced rudder, foam core, fiberglass shell. Fiberglass would be the choice for repair, the bottom would have no structural concerns so if the damage is not to bad, you might just be able to epoxy the are over. Be careful to keep it out of the sun, I had to do a repair on mine after I got a 6 inch blister form being in the sun for a few hours.
I made sure when I took it off to get it home and into my garage ASAP so it would split.
The damage is basically right at the very tip and is mostly just scraped/chewed up. The slip I used to be in was shallow and in the winter the water level would drop and the rudder would stick into the muddy bottom and twist back and forth slightly with the movement of the boat.
I just moved the boat a couple of weeks ago to a floating dock in 6' - 8' of water so it shouldn't be an issue in the future.
Will it hurt the core if I leave it like it is for a while? I don't know how long it's been this way.
When I replaced the gudgeons and pintles on my '89 I found that the lower gudgeon location made it so I could not use the bushing gudgeon replacement. Because of the balanced leading edge I could not get the rudder to swing back in place with the extra height of the bushing. I used a bushing one on top and the true Catalina Yachts one for the bottom. Son of a gun if I don't have another set just like that in my parts box! Others have said they used the bushing version top and bottom so it had to be a question of the original hand placement for my boat. So it may be an issue for you and it may not. Also, after through bolting new gudgeons on my '82 I did not on the '89, (just reused the existing bolts), and never saw any issues even in my heavy wind.
