I was watching the news and the devastation Fay has caused is unbelievable. Seeing homes and businesses flooded just blows my mind. I am from California and I will take earthquakes any day. Good luck. Steve A
And Fay is only a tropical storm. I just finished driving northeast through the north and west sides of Fay. We got out from under around Birmingham, AL. Gusts in the 40 - 50 range, continuous rain, and my gas milage really sucked.
The view is incredible when the sun is a shinning, but can get ugly with a northwest wind and thunder storms rolling in from the gulf across the State. Fleming Island is about 25 miles South of Jax and three miles South of Orange Park. It is boarder on the East by the St. Johns River, the North by Doctors Lake,(were we live), the West by Swimming Pen creek and the South by Black Creek (which reached 22 feet over flood stage during Fay's visit). Here are some pics. from better days.

And you can have them. This storm was not a bad one at all for most folks. Some in very low areas were hit hard, and then any time a storm hangs around for 3 or 4 days and just dumps rain on you it can mean trouble. But at least the very earth under me isn't shaking and I have several days to prepare for hurricanes. I shutter when I think of the 89' earthquake ......... couldn't imagine dealing with so much devastation.

And you can have them...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">Yup--I've been in a few small ones, and there's something primordially wrong about the ground moving under you--it just ain't supposed to be that way! Air is supposed to blow, rain is supposed to fall, oceans are supposed to whip up,... and as bad as they can get, we see it coming and we essentially know what's happening. Not so with earthquakes!
Here in Atlanta and for much of Ga/Ala/Miss Fay has been a blessing. Slow moving storm system adding fresh water to an area that had been so dry for so long. Could have been much worse. We were bicycle riding in a warm rain last night and it felt Great!
The Floridians have been telling us Georgians: "Careful what you wish for, it is not over yet".
Hey at least it wasn't hot. Sunday made for great sailing. 20-30K winds, reefed main. winds were gusty though, seldom could let go of the tiller to open a beer or eat.
we dodged a bullet here in pensacola (northern gulf) it's raing more today than it did all weekend.
We were offshore diving on the 16th out of PC Beach and the waves were coming from every direction. Remnants of Dolly and that other little disturbance in the area. Felt like we were offshore Cape San Blas the way the waves were chopped up. Several of the divers were seasick. Saw some Goliath Grouper. Great Fun. Did not get to Sail on Fay and I'm sad I missed it. I'll bet you were having fun!
Just got the report from my renters in Jacksonville.
The 20 inches of rain made a real mess but the water stayed about 6 inches below my front door! They said the water was up/down with the tides and you could canoe from my house to the St Johns river 1000 yards away! Only 6-8 months till I am back in my house!!!!!!!
Now Dave.. don't be so pessimistic. As my father always said, "Once they get into the gulf, you can't tell where they are going".
Or as the NHC says, "ONE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT 4 AND 5 DAY FORECASTS ARE SUBJECT TO POTENTIALLY LARGE ERRORS IN BOTH LOCATION AND INTENSITY."
The good winch ( she does not read this forum ) and I are driving down to lower mississippi this weekend so you can believe I'm watching, as is everyone on the gulf. It looks like an interesting starting place and track for a gulf hurricane...
Hi Jerry and Sandy: Thanks for publishing the pictures of your beautiful home/location.. still fortunately well above the waterline. We remember with fondness our visit and the hospitality you extended to us including a wonderful dinner during our trip around the continent. It was a highlight... The only thing we regret is that we did not plan sufficient time to do a little sailing together in a place where one can step out of the back-door and on to the boat... How fortunate you are!!! Henk for Johanna too
We too have finally had some fairly gentle rain the last 2 days, from Faye. Power did go out last night for about 2 hours, though. The ground has been really dry. I'll actually have to mow the grass this week!
Boy, you're right Dave B, Gustov sure looks like it's going to develop into a bad one. A possible 160 mph! Steve A, that's as scary as an earthquake for sure! I'm just praying it goes away somehow, goes ashore in an unpopulated area of the Yucatan or something. Nobody needs this thing hitting them. Brace for impact!
Looks like folks between Houston and the FL Panhandle have something to worry about this holiday weekend... I'd hate to see Katrina-Rita Country get hit again while they're still recovering.
If this turns out to be a whopper and headed for the Florida panhandle (I'm in wait and see mode, it's too early to tell, but all the hype sure sells advertising) anyway- I would like to sell my 87 SR WK to someone with a trailer who could come get it and take it away with them out of the path of the storm.. I'd sell cheap as it needs some cosmetic work, maybe $2000.
Ken, If your direct concern is to get your boat out of harm’s way, I would gladly let you use my trailer. I would have to find some place here in Jax to tie up for the duration but that shouldn’t be big problem. If your desire is to sell your boat, send me some pictures! Ed
