I've been assigned a job in Cleveland for two weeks. Yeah right, try November we might be done. I'm gonna be here a long time. Anyway, can someone point me to a public boat ramp in the Cleveland vicinity where I can launch my 13' day sailor. I am staying in Independence on Rockside Rd. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Also, if any one needs help, or rail meat, in the Cleveland area drop me a line. Thanks in advance, Dan
sorry to say that I live in a Cleveland 'burb but really don't know of any public ramps. There won't be any really convenient to you. There's one near the Edgewater Yacht Club that will get you into the lake behind the breakwall. With a 13' boat you'll really need good conditions to go on the Lake. Duane will chime in here with better info. Maybe he can get you launched at his club. I don't know how that works. If you have a motor on the back of it, you can launch in the Rocky River in Lakewood (a western 'burb) but it's a pretty good motor out to the lake.
Take a look at the ODNR website. You might find a smaller lake more to your liking. Since you're right on I77, you could drive a little south toward Akron or Canton and find a smaller body of water.
Why not just find a beach or a park adjacent to the lake and pick the boat up off the trailer and drop it into the water? If my daysailer had a trailer, Id do that just to avoid the hose-down and bearing issues.
Not sure where Independence is anymore, but if the ramp near Edgewater Yacht Club is not convenience, I'm pretty sure there's one in Rocky River (I think that's the name, anyway). It's just east of Bay Village.
Sorry, none in Rocky River but the one in Lakewood is on the Rocky River. There really isn't any Lake Erie access "convenient" to Independence. Still think going south is a better idea.
Thanks for the input guys. Independence is about 10 min south of Cleveland on I77. Since I posted this request, we've been working overtime so I haven't seen anything but the hotel room. I don't know anything about Cleveland or Lake Erie. I think going south will be in my near future. John, thanks for the info about Portage Lake. I could drop the boat and drag it across the sand, but it weighs 300 lbs. I can't drag it myself. If I could drop it next to the water, I'd be out there. I will have to do some exploring here one of these days after the OT ends. Thanks for all the ideas.
Edgewater state park boat ramp which is right next to the Edgewater Marina and Edgewater Yacht club would be your best bet. Any other ramp is going to put you into the Lake itself and not behind a breakwall. With a 13 footer you will most likely want to sail inside the breakwall on most days unless you get the wind out of the South. There is plenty of sailing area to do this.
There is a boat ramp in Bay village at the Bay Boat club - you'll need to call them to get permission. There is also a ramp at Bradstreet Landing (these may actually be the same place) Both of these are direct to the Lake.
I sail Jet 14's frequently on Thursday nights - so the boat itself isn't too small.

Good luck getting the boat/trailer/truck onto the beach.
