I have just finished reviewing our Association website utilizing the new browser from Google - Google Chrome.
Happy to report that every feature on the site appears to be working.
A couple of things seem to be rendered differently in Chrome, but the functionality appears to be just fine.
Over the next few days I will be tweaking the site so that it also renders as expected in this new browser.
If you note any 'gotchas' when using Chrome to view the site, please let me know (Just click on my member id in this post and you'll get the option to send me an email.
But so far, it looks pretty good!
I have not heard yet from any Mac users as to the suitability of Chrome on their systems, so if you are a mac user please let me know the status.
One feature I can alert you all to in Chrome is the dialog box restriction option. If you click on something that generates a popup dialog (you know, those little gray boxes that show you some info and have an Ok or an Ok and Cancel button), well, in Chrome you get an option to "disable future dialogs from this site" ... I strongly suggest you do not take that option ever! Dialogs are used on millions of websites to provide a variety of options and status reports, turning them off might cause some difficulty in using a website. At present the only time I see value in that feature is when a site has an error and the error box might keep appearing relentlessly, but turning them off needs an option to turn them back on, I'll find that soon.
There's quite a few browsers out there but I really like Mozzila Firefox. They're really on top of their game and continue to improve their browser. If Google Chrome stays in the news and gets good reviews for an extended period of time I may give it a whirl. What's your opinion of it Paul? Does it load fast? Does it utilize extensions and themes?
Hi Dave, it was not my intent on opening a general discussion on the pros-n-cons of different browsers, just to indicate that we are trying to stay on top of developments that may affect our website.
So far I'm impressed with Chrome, but more from a developers point of view. Cosmetically it seems very clean, however I have at least two regularly visited sites that use some heavy duty applications that are having issues with it. I have it installed on my laptop, home and office PC's.
Microsoft is releasing test versions of IE8 already, but I expect its the same old same old.....
FYI, Chrome uses much of the work developed for mozilla and webkit, it's open source and will get a lot of support. Rule: Only get it from google! IMHO.
Paul, I too have been using Chrome and so far it has got my vote. I am impressed as well. Steve A PS Please note this is feedback and not for general discussion, evaluation, review or otherwise.
