Makes me wonder how long people that are never found, lived before they succumbed.
My brother in law treaded water for half a day, then floated on a piece of his sunken boat for a day before he was found. He credited warm water and rain for keeping him alive.

My brother had a scare, but not quite on that scale. He took my little sister & a good friend out sailing on a Hobie Cat about two miles off of Hawaii. At some point he was knocked off the boat during a jibe. His friend & my sister had virtually no clue how to sail the boat, but tried to tack back to get him. They capsized the boat on their first turn. They were only a few hundred yards apart & my brother was a USN master diver, he figured he could swim it in a few minutes, help them right the boat & off they'd go. Well, two plus hours later and twenty-two capsizes (my sister's count) later, he'd long since given up swimming to the boat & had headed for shore. Unfortunately, the current was sweeping him around the point, and basically out to sea. They finally figured out what not to do, and got the boat going in his direction, and eventually were able to pick him up. All three were so exhausted that they just sailed the boat directly to shore, hiked up to the road & hitched a ride back. My brother figured he had another hour's worth of swimming in him before he went into drown-proofing instead trying to stay alive. He figured he'd miss the point by a couple thousand yards, and there wasn't much terra firma beyond for thousands of miles.

This one happened in my back yard. Amazing isn't it? the will to survive?
About 30 years ago a friend's older brother was working on a fishing boat and had the midnight watch when he decided to relieve himself off the transom. BAD MISTAKE ...... fell off, (screamed his ass off of course to no avail) watched the boat slowly putt out of sight, swam 18 miles through lots of jellyfish in 15 hours or so to finally wash up on the beach.
