My family is planning a trip to the keys in December. We will be taking our 87 wing keel. I would like to find a marina in the lower keys with a hoyst, so I don't have to put the trailer in the water. Also looking for ideas on good places to go. We love to snorkel. Thanks for the help.
Paul, (BritinUSA) just made a trip to Key West this year. Use the search function here and look for Key West. That's a long haul from Wyoming. Good luck.
Hi Benge, The only place I know that has a hoist is bluefin marina. Their ramp has hoist that can lift huge boats or you can use the ramp. We went snorkling as well as get some great sailing. Stores are an easy truck ride, they take care of your trailer.
Having said that, their facilies are not 'classey' they are 'keysie'. We're planning on staying there again over columbus weekend in October. (not sure what that says about us
How long are you going to be down there? Our december trip is for new years weekend.
We plan to be gone from here about 18 days. It will take at least 2 and maybe three days to travel. We Leave 12-19 and be back 1-5 we won't have much money left after paying for gas so I plan to anchor most of the time. If we use the ramp, is there a place to wash down the trailer? Please keep feeding me info. There was very little when I tried the search. Thanks.
Benge, we have stayed at Key Largo: John Pennekamp state park and Bluefin marina, and at Long Key: Sunbird marina. Pennekamp has great faclities and have both slips and moorings and a nice ramp, access to the ocean is via a channel, well marked and about 20+ minutes to the ocean. Bluefin has slips, don't think they have any moorings, but it looks like there's plenty of anchorage in the area and access to the ocean is minutes. there are local superstores in easy reach by truck from both pennekamp and bluefin. Sunbird is much further south and has access to the ocean under a high bridge, about a hour from the marina to the ocean. . We mostly sail around Biscayne Bay, that's about 30miles NS and 7 miles EW, access to the ocean is via Angel fish creek in the south and biscayne channel to the north. Biscayne bay is a great place to sail, it costs $16 per day to keep the truck and trailer at the marina, and the they have a huge parking area. A big plus for biscayne bay is comparitivley sheltered conditions, though we have had some heavy sqalls inside the bay. Elliott key has bathrooms and showers, the harbor and entrance have skinny water so what is your draft?
Do you have a dink? If you are anchoring, then that will expand your options.
You can email me directly if you click on my profile name to the left of this post. Paul
If you are driving around the clock with multiple drivers you'll make it in 2 - 3 days. It takes us 2 - 3 days of fast driving to reach the keys from OH without a tow but stopping at night.
