Well, as Don B posted in Gary's topic, yes that was from me on another forum.
Long story short, the north side of the lake is a warzone. My marina is blown to pieces. I found the boat still floating in the surge on saturday and I tried to save her by pushing her back through the water to the marina. I found that she had yanked 2 pier posts, risers and all, and drug them with her! Suprisingly, damage was minimal! The water was just getting more and more shallow as the parking lot rose heading towards the marina. I eventually got her stuck in the driveway and I had to leave her and evaluate my options once the water receded. As posted previously, if she fell to port she would be fine. If she fell to starboard, I would loose the rig.
I headed down to kemah on wednesday afternoon to save the boat with a wrecker who had a 20ft flatbed. I had carpet and plywood to save the hull while we drug it up on the truck and headed for a boat ramp. I got a disturbing call while enroute that they had condemed the condos which house my marina and my boat and that they needed to get vehicles in pronto to get their belongings. They gave them less than 24 hours.
I arrived to find my boat has been drug down the street with a truck so they could pass by and start saving their homes. In the process the mast caught the carport and ripped it off and bent in 2 parts. Who knows how bad the hull is but the mast damage alone has forced to me reconsider keeping her. I simply will not pay for a mast at a price that I bought the entire boat for. Im already in the market for another boat so I will just chaulk up my losses.
Im in negotiations with a salvage guy in Alabama that has offered me $600 for my boat as is. I think I might take it. I have a few parts I will be selling here, 110% jib, rudder, hatch boards, etc. Ill post some pictures soon.
Sorry to hear that David, I was reading in the other forum and keeping my fingers crossed. I guess priorities got in the way before you could. I hope you get something back between salvage, parts (and insurance?). At least I read good spirits in your post, good luck going forward.
Is the hull damaged David? I was wondering the other day as I looked at your photo while she was still floating if a marina nearby might use a forklift for lifting boats in and out of the water. One near me does that. It has very long forks in the front and is able to lower the boat well below the level of the lift. Maybe a yard like that might be interested in rescuing your boat?? I imagine it wouldn't be cheap and would likely take a while to get to you but probably cheaper than replacement costs.
i just found out that I had 4K worth of storm and flood coverage. We will see where this goes. I think the boat is totaled, and Im kind of hoping they think the same. I mean besides the mast, it was drug down a street for almost 50yards and it bent the keel! I dont want to have to worry about my keel trunk integrity while Im sailing!
David, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, but at least you were not hurt. GaryB had been communicating with someone via this forum who is trying to sell an '89 boat. Good luck with the insurance. Take lots of pics!
