Clam's is a good approach... My boat came to me with a topping lift from a clevis pin on the masthead to a block and clam cleat on the boom end... I added a two-part "tackle" at the end, using a little fiddle block with a V that acts as a jam-cleat, so I could adjust it more easily. As Clam says, once you get it right, you can leave it alone--slack with the sail up, and holding the boom just high enough with it down. But you can also hoist the boom higher while at the dock. (I put a stopper knot in for the ideal "sailing" position, and often hoisted it above that at the dock.)
Thanks Dave, that did help. I was thinking about drilling down from the top and adding a eye, but I already have a tang added aft that has 2 screws down from the top that holds the wind vane. A clevis pin horizontal would work better as you suggested.
I guess I'll have 1/4 line down from the pin to blocks and cam cleat.
Hey hey.. I can use it as a flag halyard!
The grlfrnd will like that ( the grlfrnd IS the admiral )

I thought running the topping lift down as a single line and adding a block at the end if this line, and a block on the boom, with a loop between them and using this as a flag halyard as well.
Grlfrnd wants a flag halyard and I don't like the ones on the stays, so I'm looking for another location.
