The people selling the mains say they have "several" sails left. I called when the first mention of them appeared on this site. My main was not terribly well cared for by those that went before me. It has some life left in it but there is no good shape to it anymore and I intended to mail it away this winter for cleaning and minor repairs. I decided to take a chance on the $350. new main. My computer went down before I bought it and a few days later when I was back on line it was gone...I called the seller and he remembered me from our 1st conversation and agreed to sell me the 2nd sail for $350.(plus shipping about 32.00) The sail arrived three days later and it is beautiful. The stitching and reinforcement areas are identical to the original. Everything seems to be of the same quality or perhaps a little better. The only "flaw" if you could call it that is that the Catalina 250 logo on the sail is ever so slightly off kilter. The top of the diamond shape is 1" closer to the luff bolt than the bottom. (Or farther away on the reverse side if you will)However my old original equipment logo was off by the same amount in the opposite direction. The sail bag is better than the old one with a logo and a sewn on "Catalina 250" panel on each side. It came with three high quality sail ties with Catalina Yachts woven into the fabric along with a sewn in loop on the end and velcro tabs. I unfolded the sail on my lawn and placed the old main on top...every thing matches up just right; i.e. reef points and batten pockets etc. The only difference I can see is the batten pockets. My old sail (Gracie is a 98 WB # 360)had overlaping velcro flaps to secure the battens and the new sail has a single flap...a more conventional pocket flap if you will. I think I got a good buy...I'm even thinging of taking it to a local sailmaker and having him cut an inch off the botton and making it a loose footed sail...this would, I believe, make sail shape better and enhance performance greatly...any comments on that would be appreciated. Wether these people bought surplus sails from Catalina or this was a double order that was sold for cost I have no way of knowing but I think they intend to list them one at a time and increase the price by $50 each time until there is no interest. Any other questions please let me know!
By the way, prior to buying this sail I called several sail lofts in NJ for a price. Two have them made overseas and they were$850 and 950. Morehouse Sails who make all their own stuff in their own shop wanted more that $1200 but that would have been loose footed and the fabric was a half ounce heaver.
Since my main was the original main which came with the boat (thirteen years old) I went down to the warehouse and picked up one of these new mains. These are built to the new specification of P= 24' 6" E= 11' where the original specification for the main sail which came with my boat was P= 25' and E= 11' which gave me 2.5 sq. ft. more sail aria, per the specifications, than this new sail. I have also seen a specification from Catalina for a P= 24' 4" and E= 11' so this has changed over the years. I asked where he got the sails from and he told me they a shipment of sails going to Catalina in Woodland Hills (the old plant) which is now shut down and the shipper did not have the new Florida address so they were considered undeliverable. The shipper auctioned them off as lost freight.
I bought one today for $400 from the seller on ebay, he mentioned it was the last one he had. I haven't seen anything negative about the seller here on the board so I'm assuming those who bought one are satisfied.
Steve; We've been using our new main, from the same seller, for about a month. We're very happy with it, it has a much better shape than our old one, the boom sits a little higher, giving more clearance for our bimini. We were able to reuse our old battens, I think I had to shorten one a little. We were so happy to get the new main, we took the plunge and got a new Jib, from Catalina loft, also. Sure is nice having a new set of sails again, the boat sails like new.
Thanks Bill, I'm looking forward to getting it on the boat,I may take it to the sailmakers first to get the numbers put on, not sure about that yet. My old main is original and soft as a bed sheet. I was wondering about the battens fitting and slide size, 5/16 or 3/8. My 150 jib is OK and the 135 has been used very little, the PO always used the 150.
