Keep in mind that all you have to hit is a 30 mile radius circle around Cochin, so when you get reasonably close you can adjust your course for best speed to hit close to the buoy. You don't have to hit it dead center.
Congratulations Paul! I cut your lead down from 80 miles or so Friday evening to 34 miles when you finished at 3:55 PM CST today but alas, I just couldn't get to you quick enough!
Enjoy the shower and cold brew. I'll join you in about 6 hours or so!
I was lucky enough to adjust for the wind shift before going to bed last night. Was able to aim directly at the pin and in the morning I was finished. Since they finished me at 29 miles I must have closed about 50 miles in six hours or so.
This is very cool. I hope to get some of my fellow racers in on the next leg.

After a couple of legs I've noticed a few things. The leaders tend to stay clumped together and a few of them have placed admirably in both legs, "Aldabra" in particular. Pay attention to how these guys are sailing and adjust for the winds for when you get to where they were (unless you're ahead, in which case we'll just follow you..). Also, you can't go wrong by "follow the yellow brick road", as long as you stay close to the plotted yellow line on your map, you'll do OK. I learned this the hard way on leg one. That doesn't mean there aren't advantages to be had by going off the reservation, it's just if you're like me, I didn't have tons of time to be analyzing every last bit of weather info all the time, I had to do it one breaks or before going to bed, etc. (rant)Now, of course, I have all the time in the world in between sending out resumes & searching CL for want ads, so maybe I'll do better this time around (/rant)
The next leg starts around 1am PST next Saturday morning so you guys on the east coast have it a bit easier. Hopefully they've got their servers up to speed & don't have to do a recall drop like on leg two.
Finally got into port yesterday. I was camping all weekend with no internet assess, so the game had suffered. Thanks to all your help, especially Paul A. Now for the next leg.
Referring to your thread on the general forum can you detail what you're planning for winners?
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">A bunch of us participated in the first legs of the volvo ocean race game (VOR)
The Association officers voted this evening to reward participants from this forum if they lead the group on any of the upcoming legs of the race.
If you are a member of this forum and join the catalina group on the VOR, and you complete the entire leg of the race (there are 7 legs left) then you could win either an Association Burgee (members only) or a free membership in the association for one year.
Visit the Racing Forum and go to the 'Is anyone else playing VOR?'
Get into the race now. Any questions, ask in the racing thread.
For instance, what if Rita's boat (Lard Butt) wins? We're already members (but we don't have a burgee), but she only reads the forum, and almost never posts.
What defines "leads"? Are you talking about in the race, or between the folks in the group?
What about overall standings, EG, currently I lead the group overall, but someone else (the site's not reporting correctly right now, but I think it's Avocado) lead leg two.
David, Intent: Promote activity on the forum during the quiet winter months (boats on hard/frozen waters, etc) Method: Encourage participation in the VOR and give rewards Rewards: Catalina/Capri 25s that participate and register with the group you set up could earn rewards. We would offer a reward for each leg. Awarding: Qualified (see above) participants that arrive at the end of the leg with the smallest finish position would get either a burgee (members only) or a free membership in the Assoc. (non-members only) Ceremonies: At the conclusion of each leg, we would run the report showing position in the group. The first arrivee in the group to be declared the winner of the reward.
We could hold an online event (post in the thread with photo, review of the leg etc.)
Gotta be fun! But for the serious racers out there, we should consider limiting entries to the group to one per person.
So previous participation would not be an issue. It's on a per leg basis.
It would be nice if we could negotiate on the rewards for cicumstances as you point out.
Credits: David got us involved in this and offered valuable help to those of us that got in after the start. Paul brought it up at the Flag Officers meeting. Russ had the idea of rewards.
The next leg starts on Saturday 13/12/08 at 0930 GMT+1. Your boat will be started by the game automatically on the optimum heading. I suggest you log on sometime later to assess your situation.
I'd guess that would be sometime Sat am early (3ish) for me.

To register within the Catalina International Assocation Group of the VOR, login to the vor site then click on My Account and then Click on 'Groups'. You have to get accepted into the group. David is in charge of that.
