From my vantage, Vida Nova only purchased the Pro Sails package.
He's still kicking my butt! I just passed the Mauritius mark overnight, now heading for the doldrums, not much wind up there across the board in my time. The pro's are only doing 4-10 knots up there, but I'm hitting 15knts while there's wind.
watched some of the videos from the pros: broken boats - on water repairs, water everywhere - they are drying out now, and which way to go! - might only be light winds, but their boat is still getting bucked around!
I got the autopilot thing but don`t use it that much. I plot my strategic course way ahead using the 12h, 24h, 36h wind forecaster and make sure I will be where there`s going to be wind. I log on about every 4-8 hours reanalyze and do minor adjustments. As far as I know we ALL have the Pro sails package which came free when answering a question correctly when registering.
It is fun, and the admiral is learning about sailing in an easy way. She is beating me hands down.. Hehehe I'm likely to go any way where are winds predicted, but you usually don't get where you'd like until 36-48 hrs so it is hard to predict that far out.
It's killing me trying to get into Cochin, the wind is SOOO fluky, every time I check back, I'm at zero or near that boat speed. I've been trying to get in for two days now. Frustrating!
I finally nursed Lepak into port around 1am PST this morning. The winds were horrible, clocking around all over the place in very short time periods. It was easy to find yourself completely becalmed because the wind was all of a sudden on your nose.
I was kicking Lepak's tail a little over a week ago. Then we went out of town for Thanksgiving and I couldn't get to a computer until Sunday afternoon so after a week of no computer I'm now in the middle of nowhere with no wind.
Hi David, I finished last night at place # 32,180. I guess that wasn't too bad considering I was placed behind the pace boat as a penalty after I passed to the wrong side of the mark. (I swear - I never saw it) You mentioned posting a PDF of the marks to the race, any chance of me getting a copy prior to the beginning of the next leg? Good luck to the remainder of you still on your way in to Cochin, I'll be monitoring your progress. Scott
Scott, Don't feel too bad, on the first leg I had no idea there were any marks to round either. I did my homework, figured out the great circle route from the Cape Verde Islands, and headed for Cape Town in ignorant bliss. Then I read something about the mark off of Brazil...my place in the race went from about 1200th to around 6kth while correcting for it.
I'll look for the PDF some more today, I had it on my work computer, but since I got laid off a couple of weeks ago, I no longer have access. You can also search for it, it seems like it was on the VOR website somewhere, I just don't remember where I found it, and the one other guy I sent it to didn't save the link anywhere.
Oh, and welcome to the forum! There are lots of guys on here with your model boat (we've got the wing keel) if you've got questions about stuff.
Kendall is about to hit land! The boat is doing nearly 8 knts and is minutes off shore!
Gary & I are only 40 miles apart and I'm just 100nm from the finish. I keep looking over my shoulder though! At 7am I got up and checked my position, needed a coarse correction, noted that Gary was still on his overnight course. Changed my sail and heading and then noted that Gary had updated his too!
