As daylight savings comes to an end my season of sailing (nearly) every day comes to a close.
Log of Indiscipline since March 11, 2008 = 1530 nautical miles sailed. Estimated 550 hours at sea in 8 months (average speed 2.75 knots). All but about 200 miles single handed.
I'll try real hard to make my 2000 miles by next March and the start of the new Daylight savings time season.
Saturday I was out practicing starts, buoy roundings, and just plain ocean sailing "racing" some lesser yachts (Santana 20, Catalina 30). I had rain, wind, no wind, sun, more rain, lots of wind, sun again, light wind, all in 5 hours and sailed 13 miles. Also broke the vang because I lost a split ring (should be fixed tonight).
I need 100 miles/month to make my 2000 for the year!
Races are nearly over for the season, but I'll have the season-ending Turkey Day race Nov. 15 and I'll certainly do the New Year's Day Regatta for the 4th year in a row. I am tied for 4th in the San Diego All Catalina Association race points, so the last race is vital.
Last year I completed 1700 miles total.
I've owned Indiscipline 5 years (will be 6 next April) and estimate 7000 miles sailed so far.
Too bad its dark because its wild today - more rain and wind and would certainly be an epic after work sailing day today!
Are you saying that you will be reduced to sailing only on the weekends, like many of us?
Will your razor sharp sailing skills actually decline, and you will be lost in a sea of confusing ropes on a scary boat you hardly know?
Will you head out through the kelp beds and forget which way to push the tiller? (If I want to go left, do I push it over here? Oh, no! The boat's tilting over...We're gonna sink!!! )
Somehow, I don't think so!
It was fun to hear about all your cruises and races this year. I was one of your lucky crew members back in April, and I thank you for the chance to sail on Indiscipline III.
I'm keeping my boat in the water this winter, and my next adventure will be a 4-day cruise from the Magothy River down the Bay to St. Michaels, MD and back the weekend after next with 2 old friends. Lots of northerly winds.
Yeah, pretty much weekends only for the next 4 months. I sail every Sunday.
Nov. 15 will be the next race, for me this is an overnight cruise to San Diego Friday night, anchor out, race on Saturday, and a night cruise back to Mission Bay Saturday night. Crew needed for the race only.
Dec. 13 will be the Mission Bay Holiday Parade of lights, with all of Fleet 7, we always do this.
Jan. 1 will be the New Years Day regatta, also an overnight cruise for me.
Starting in Jan. our racing season begins again and if I can find consistent crew I'll certainly enter in the Cabrillo series which is 4 offshore races over Jan. and Feb.
It's time - sell the house and everything else! Put everyone and everything onboard something bigger and never look back! 2000 miles! It's in your blood! Bloodtype = Saltwater... You need to go! Should we organize an intervention?
