The ten minute gun's already gone off, Rita & I are poised at our respective, um...helms, ready to head off towards SE Asia with all of you guys in trail.
Ya know, I don't get this game. I signed in around 7AM this morning and I'm in 12,000th some odd place. I check the winds, adjust my course a couple of degrees, refresh the screen and I lost 77,000+ places! All in about 1 minute.
I've worked my way back up to 82,904th place and moving at 3.9 knots.
Avocado is one mile or less ahead of me and in 12,607 at 3.4 knots Gambit's one mile or less ahead of me and in 19,549 at 3.4 knots
Then, Vida Nova is even with me and in 80,333 at 1.7 knots Joint Decision is even and in 81,546 at 3.8 knots
I'm not exactly sure how the game measures DTF, it appears for now to be pretty much down the dashed orange line. Just remember there are currently 100,000 boats within 6 miles or so of each other, so until the fleet spreads out, the miles between don't mean too much. You can pass 10,000 boats in less than a mile!
If it helps, I went from first place last night right after the starting gun to over 80kth place now (9 hours later). But, like you said, you could easily walk from deck to deck as tens of thousands of boats clear port. Things will shape up in the next couple of days, and I hope we do well as a group.
I think you're right about DTF, it's measured along the "yellow brick road", so if your strategy takes you away from it, you're penalized for being away from the line. This is just my opinion after observing the game for some time, take it with a grain of salt.
Best course right now seems to be about 160 with code zero up. I'm making 3.2kn with that combo.
Edit: Ignore that advice, the winds are so flukey around Cochin that you have to constantly mind your boat for a while to get clear. Pay attention to the 2pm (PST) wind change, it looks dramatic right now.
First and second is pretty good. I got as high as tenth place yesterday but then hit land and dropped about 94000 places pretty quick. Have clawed back this morning, along with most of our group, to the low teen thousands place.
Coming after Kendall and Short Bus for now. I think the leaders will shake up as they hit or have to avoid land.
Out of the game this morning as I was on an RC boat for the Gulfstream sailing club Commodores Race. Lost 10,000 and am in a southerly wind when all about it's blowing west! Trying to stop the losses!
Rita's still getting the hang of the game & thought she was out of it by going southwest. Now she's positioned to make great gains in ~10kn winds, while I'm staring at the tip of Sri Lanka scrabbling to make headway against an east wind, and happy to get 3kn. I predict she'll make great strides with the next wind change in an hour or so (2pm PST). I, on the other hand am getting ready to hold a pity party with the erstwhile leaders (or soon to be), maybe we'll just stop by & have a beer in Colombo.
If I hadn't changed heading this morning I'd be right with Rita.
Hang tight, in about 10 minutes we're going to get a 5.9 knot wind change and should really start making up some ground on Avocado and his running buddies.
Avocado's kicking butt, he's down below the 200th place, way to go Garner! See you off the coast of Sri Lanka shortly I hope (as long as your wind stays dead).
I'm running neck & neck with my friend Chris (not in the group), and trading jibes (not gybes) about nearly everything. He noticed that Aldabra headed north between India & Sri Lanka, we think to escape the doldrums we're all currently experiencing. It ought to be interesting to see how that choice plays out.
I'm trying to just brush the tip of Sri Lanka & cut the course a bit, we'll see how that goes.
Rita (Lard Butt) is trying to figure out why she keeps losing spots, but still think she's well positioned to make up some distance on her southerly course.
I see they removed the bouy on the southern tip of SriLanka, now the game won't load argggggg! Fenders! I'm able to get to all the site features except the game, that responds with a page not found
Thanks David. Strategy wise, I am going to go pretty mush straight to the next buoy as soon as I clear Sri Lanka. Who else plans on doing this? Is their any thing wrong with not following the curved route of the orange line? For this leg I really understand the controls and hope to finish realistically in the top 5000.
The curved line is just a suggestion. It is fun to watch the actual race and see where they go. They call it the 2D race viewer on the home page of the race (not the homepage of the race game )
Okay, so now I know why the old thread was so hot during the previous leg.
A few questions - Is there a way to only see your group or your friends on the map. I've tried multiple different things and it gets pretty squirly. I'm pretty tech savvy and there are some aspects of this that make me want to pull out my hair.
It appears that not only can you not hit another boat, but they also cast no wind shadow.
I keep seeing an add for free Virtual Skipper online. Has anyone played that? I used to have a desktop version and played online with people a few years ago until idiots came up with courses that look like they were designed by a pond sailor's kid. Wondered if that has changed with the free online version?
I'm sure I have other questions, but I'll have to get to them later.
<font size="3">Third leg restart!</font id="size3"> Make sure you read this, they're restarting the third leg because of people going up the slot between Sri Lanka & India (Aldabra for one), so at 0200 PST they're teleporting all boats back to the southern tip of Sri Lanka & starting over.
Can I ask for redress to get my entire first weekend back? Maybe they could give out 48 free hours of the automated tool? Personally I think those 3 or 4 boats played the game correctly. I was heading for that part of the water (albeit the long way) because the wind was looking way better
