I will be replacing my small genny--115. I rarely change my genny, therefore what I want is an all purpose headsail. I would like to go to a 150 but am afraid that I won't be pleased if much of the time I will have part of it furled. So do I go with a 135 or a 150? I'm not a racer. Where I am we frequently get winds 18-25.

If you're not racing and live in a relatively windy area as you describe; and are uncomfortable sailing on the edge all the time, I would suggest the 135. Then, later, if you find that you need more canvas on the occasional light air days you can get a small asymetrical spinaker or blooper.

I agree, you'll probably be happier with a 135.

Jim, I am just curious, what do you want to accomplish with changing to a larger sail. Are you unhappy with current one or time to replace due to age?

Tall or standard rig? If tall, for the best combination of performance and comfort in 18-25 knots, I'll suggest 110 is all you need. If standard, 135 with a reefed main is about all the power you can use, and should outrun a 110 with a full main, with less heel.

If 18-25mph normally, then the 150 is too much and you will be furling it often. As Dave indicated, the 135 may be too much as well. In my neck of the woods, I do use a 150 but my winds are generally 5-10mph oftentimes over the summer months and 10-15 at other times.

I have a standard Rig. Just looking for a little more "umph" on light August days. Thanks for all of your advice. You "tipped" my decision to go with a 135.
You confirmed my instincts. I do have an asym that I can use On real light days. I enjoy a rail in the water but not in the cabin. Thanks so much. I should hang out here more often.

Welcome, Jim... Join up and jump in--the water's fine! You might have a few things to tell us, too!
