Don't let your issues with the internal outhaul disuade you. I installed it in an couple of hours. Believe me, when you start thinking about installing other stuff on your boom to make life easier in the cockpit, you'll appreciate the intenal outhaul.
Al: your right. I was looking at the 8 to 1 outhaul on CD web. With my finger ready to click the order. Then I though it mite not go so well if my wife went to the door on Valentines day and the UPS person hands hear a box of sailboat parts. Mabe not a good time. The 8 to 1 is now on my CD wishlist. An't sailing fun ED.
I ordered the CD internal unit and sent it back, a loose footed main simply has no need for anything over 3:1 so the 4:1 micro blocks that took ten minutes to rig are more than enough. Lowell agreed. The issue with screws in the boom is also a factor, bottom line it may put a grin on your face but it is expensive and accomplishes nothing that a simple purchase at the back of the boom can do easier, cheaper and quicker. Sorry Al, not with you on this one. Caveat: If you wanna... do it!
I am with you on this one. I have merely a line, no blocks, nada. I plan on having external, and simple. I really enjoy reading and viewing the pictures of how folks set up their outhaul. It helps to develop ideas before buying.
I used the internal system for two reason: First, the internal outhaul configuration allows me to adjust the sail foot from the cockpit without having to haul the boom in from outboard as you would with a short pigtail on the end of the boom. Secondly, with the two, two-line reefing system I have on my boat,I didn't want the boom cluttered up with additonal line. In a small cockpit, extra line hanging off the boom is a safety hazard and could interfere with my reefing lines if I have to reef the main in a hurry.
As mentioned in my earlier post, the internal lines did hang up on screws inside the boom. I fixed the problem by using shorter screws where it tended to catch. Problem solved.
