I fouled my 150 genny in a stiff November breeze and tore a six foot section of the leech. The sail is about 12 years old. I repaired the sail with sail tape and sailed with it a couple more times without a problem. As I get together my priority list for the season- how far into the 2009 season do you think I can get with my head sail as is? I have a tight budget.
In light air, it will probably last you a while, depending on how well you did the repairs. I did the same thing to my C-22 genoa in 2007, but the sail was older than yours. I opted for a new one. I know this is a bad time to be spending boat units, but check out National Sail Supply (Florida), The Sail Warehouse (Calif.), and Island Planet Sails (Oregon). They all handle Rolly Tasker sails, which are good inexpensive cruising sails. I've bought from all 3 without any problems. Unless you sail in a lot of light air, you might want to consider a 135, and hold on to the repaired 150 ror really light air days. Also, check ebay for used sails. I've seen several recently.
For something closer to home, try Bacon Sails in Annapolis (I think). They have a huge used inventory, and are priced nicely.
Your repair is a crapshoot. It may hold it may not. If you are tight on a budget this may be an opportunity to learn the herringbone stitch. Since the sail should likely be replaced, you have nothing to lose. Whatever you chose to do, I would be sure to carry a second headsail anytime you head out with that one hanked on.
Isn't a 6 foot long tear kindof big to risk on sailtape? Our sailtape is only about 2" wide and I don't know that I would trust it on a tear that long.
You never said where the tear is. If it is close to the leech or foot maybe a sail loft could cut it down or properly patch it but to have the tape fail during the season without a back up...well the season is to short to be standing on shore for 4-6 weeks waiting for a new sail.
Yes, ruach means wind, spirit, breath. The tear is along the leech. I went to Doyle sails which happens to be right next to our marina and they gave me some four to five inch wide strips of sail tape. Lots of the stuff. I think they know I'll be back soon enough. Anyway I hope I can get through at least three quarters of the season with my taped wonder. Thanks for the input. I've never really used the stuff before so your experience is helpful.
