Is there anywhere to buy a single shroud? I want to replace one that is bent slightly on the threaded portion, preventing the turnbuckle from further adjustments. I don't feel like replacing the entire set of shrouds like the kit on Catalina Direct.
My Catalina dealer in Cincinnati fabricated them on order. I bent and bought two, and stressed them hard, and they never failed. If you order one from him, he'll want you to send the bent one to him, so he can be sure it's a stock length. I thought his price was reasonable, especially since I didn't have to buy a whole set. You can contact him at the following website.
I seem to recall that when I bought a full set from CD, there was the option to buy any part of it... I'd call them. For another alternative, go to any major marina talk to a rigger. The guy I used did it regularly, but he said he recommended I take advantage of CD's price for the set. (How old are yours?)
I ordered shrouds for my little boat. I had them custom made at Defender. They did an excellent job. they told me two weeks delivery and I had them in two days.
The shrouds I ordered for my small boat were 1/8" wire, fork swedged on one end and an eye at the other. 13' long, two each, including shipping, $85.00. If you fill out the request form, they will email you a quote in about 1 day. You might try the factory. I bought my keel cable from them and they were way cheaper than everybody else. 818-884-7700. Ask for parts.
Hows the shroud attach to the mast? (ps - boat is an hour away from my house). The ones I see online (Cat-direct) have a loop in them. Just wondering if I can use a small ladder to get to the connection while shes on-the-hard.
Dave suggested to check how old is the rig. Lower the mast? Check the Forum for suggestions to lower mast to check fittings, pins and keepers. Get four people to hold the ladder.
thanks - still don't see the connection of the shroud to the mast. Not a biggie. I'll bring a full set of tools and a ladder and WD40 and see what I can see!
John, You're going to have to unhook the shroud from the spreader somehow. Or remove the spreader from the mast and lower it all. Use the jib halyard from the top of the mast to the lifeline stancion in place of the shroud. It doesn't have to be tight, just enough to stabilize the mast. Loosen the shrouds on both sides evenly. I wouldn't attempt it without lowering the mast.
Dan - I am talking about the <u>lower </u>shroud that attaches to the mast under the spreader (not the upper shown in your post above). I probably have not been making myself clear.
Sorry, John--gotta ask one more time... How old is your standing rigging? In salt water and on Buzzard's Bay, I wouldn't want older than 15 years. The main failure points are just inside the swages, where you can't see what is called "crevice corrosion" in the cable. A rigger once told me that if you wait till you see meat-hooks, your mast is coming down.
Yeh Dave - I hear ya, but we're going to try to get by on a shoestring budget with this rig for a while. I have to prove to myself and family that we really want to sail. If if works out ok this year (we'll take it easy on the boat) then we'll start basic upgrades next season.
I will give all the rigging a much thorough inspection B4 venturing anywhere. Thanks
