If you are considering following the lead of those who have gone ahead and removed the middle section of stern rail, I just found a supplier (in Canada) who has the fittings to install a pelican hook & gate in its place; or to simply plug the cut ends of the rail.
As you may already have seen, I just left a little extension where the light is attached--you can sorta see it behind the bimini strut--and cut the starboard side flush to the stanchion. I thought it was a trivial difference.
So now that I have a "new" stern rail for Passage after last fall's nor'easter twisted up the port section like a pretzel.
Two questions: >> Should I remove the middle section so that it goes back to "normal"? and >> Where should I hang the replacement stern light? ?ust bolt it on to one of aft stanchions? . . . rather than trying to recreate Dave's cool hanger.

That's Dave's solution to a tricky boarding situation in a town boat club slip, and turned out to be nice for operating the outboard and using the boarding ladder... YMMV. (Leaving the center in might help avoid future "folding like a pretzel.")
quote:
Where should I hang the replacement stern light? ?ust bolt it on to one of aft stanchions? . . . rather than trying to recreate Dave's cool hanger.

That wasn't Dave's cool hanger... It was Catalina's. The "new" rail doesn't have it? Does it have a hole for wires?
