Turnkey boating... You drive a car, a boat has a steering wheel and a throttle... You figure you can drive that too. Jump in, everyone, and let's gitterdun! No speed limits, no double-yellow lines, beer everywhere! Anchor won't come up? I got 250 horsies that say it's comin' up! Tie that thing over here... Here we go! Holy $#!+
Reading the report, apparently the other three became unconscious or died of hyperthermia in the presence of the fourth, who saw them drift away. Not something you'd want to live with.
Not to be insensitive, but you'd think they could afford better beer.

My thoughts exactly. My wife is a major NFL fan - and I asked her if they were making enough money. Busch Light is apparently only slightly more expensive than Natural light - good golly.... Why didn't they throw in a bottle of MD20/20 or a couple 40's of Old English?
OK - want insensitive? - NFL - Not Floating Long! - borrowed from someone way more insensentive than myself.

Or Mickey's green grenades? Once watched a guy break (dislocate?) his shoulder jumping off a rock into the Colorado river. They'd been drinking green grenades all day. He didn't completely miss the rock. Swam back, climbed back up complaining about his shoulder. When they got him to the hospital, he was so drunk on Mickey's that they couldn't anesthetize him to set it.
Rita's a frothing at the mouth NFL fan, which seems strange for someone who grew up watching "real" football (soccer), and her most aggressive sport ever played was badminton. She was very distressed by this story on a number of levels. First of which was "could this happen to our boat"?

I don't think you could kill five people by running into a docked tug, either.

quote:
C'mon. Hmmm.... I thought the posts were pretty innocuous really, but duly noted. I would like to point out that Donald Crowhurst's family is probably in the same boat - figuratively speaking. So is anyone alive or deceased that f's up completely - really. Of course it is sad. Donald Crowhurst and his demise is and was sad, and will always be so. But to try to mandate that folks do not disparage his memory by recalling the more idiotic aspects of his life/demise is impossible, and should be so.
Like it or not, life has its consequences, good and bad. Screw up, as the NFL owner of the vessel did, and you take your buddies with you. Same deal with the drunk driver who wipes out his buddies after running a red light. Sorry, no free pass from me. Fair game - dead or alive. Perhaps if people realized that they would be held accountable in death - like if they cared - more folks would be more responsible. Seriously...
And besides - Duckman - You live in OREGON, the land of fine brew! You should be outraged that they weren't drinking Widmer Hefeweisen, or Bridgeport IPA, or Rogue Dead Guys Ale. Oops, I guess they drank the last one - see?
(OT - a friend died while I was on the hook in Martha's Vineyard, and I randomly found his obit after buying a paper for the first time in whatever, so I felt that it was meant for me to go to his checking out ceremony in VT. That was an ordeal for sure. Anyway, he WAS an Oregonian and loved great brew - so they actually served the Rogue Dead Guy Ale in his memory)
Back to my point - If I go out with a bunch of people in gale force winds with heavy seas, just for kicks, without a reef in, bumpers still hanging from the sides, and something bad happens, and then after the Coasties recover my boat they find Busch Light cans? Tar and feather me here my friends, 'cuz I'll be watching from above making sure you do.
The tone of this thread encompasses the aspect of sensitivity. Every community defines the norms of what is sensitive and how to address sensitivity. Herein lies the rub: while one person's perception may be that some postings are not sensitive, others believe those postings to be not offensive.
One can not deny how the human condition is able to take the most tragic event and still make humor from it; perhaps a method for dealing with such tragic events? -- I don't know for I am not a head shrink.
One aspect to think about: our words are written here and in digital format, and like it or not, it is a reflection of our times, sentiments, and culture. How the future generations think of us would be interesting to know -- but then again, does anyone care? -- throwing the notion out there for us to think about.
I find it very refreshing to read the differing opinions in all the threads. Those opinions give me time to reflect and think about ideas. It is one of the reasons why I believe this community is great. The sharing and give and take makes for a dynamic and engaging medium.
I have seen online communities that have gone stale because they are non self-sustaining. No one contributes.
Thanks Randy and Sten for a well balanced perspective.
Thanks for allowing me to post my perspective as well ;-)
