Since I rarely use my propane stove I would like to replace the large propane tank in the starboard lazarette with a smaller one and provide me with more storage room. Has anyone done this and what's the best way to do it? Thanks.

Frank,
Depending on how small you want to go, there are a couple of ways to go about this. They make connections that let you use one of the small 1lb canisters on a large hose. That would maximize your space. If you want more propane available than that, you can buy smaller tanks (I have no idea what size is in your boat, ours doesn't have the built in propane). The prices for the smaller ones are ridiculous compared to a standard 20lb that you can pick up at Costco for $20. Even more so if you want an aluminum one, or if you really want to go pricey, go for a fiberglass tank.

Frank, like David says you could go to the small canister and just attach it right under the galley when you need it. I think that is a mod on Arlyn's site. That would allow you to pull the propane locker out of the starboard lazarette completely. If you do this I would recommend that you keep the equipment in storage so that it can be re-installed later on if you sell the boat. The factory-supplied propane system is well done and has key safety features including proper ventilation and electronic shutoff (solenoid).

Actually I don't think I'd remove the propane equipment at all. The equipment is designed to help protect you in the event of a leak, and if you can have your propane stored in a purpose built area (your starboard cockpit locker), I'd keep storing it there instead of having it in the cabin. All you need to get is the one connector that lets you attach the small canister to the end of the original hose. Any RV or propane dealer will have them.

I think this is what you're looking for:
Although the threads on the end of the hose might be different, not sure (I've never seen one on a Catalina, only read about them).

I found it here: http://www.bestmaterials.com/detail.aspx?ID=16831

They probably make one that lets you directly connect to the existing POL fitting. Like this:

Thanks for the input, mates. Based on your collective, and very professional advice, I'm going to leave well enough alone. Even if I successfully downsized the canister it wouldn't give me enough added storage room in the lazerette to justify the change.
