That you just visited a store over an hour away and forgot to buy something that you meant to buy?
I was at my local West Marine on Saturday (1:15 away) and bought some rail mounts and just perused the store, etc. It was not until I got home that I remembered that I wanted to buy some Starboard for my new motor mount install! I can not believe that I did not think to buy it! I looked right at it and was thinking of thicknesses, etc. Then I just kept looking at other things, found my mounts and paid and left! Sheesh!
On the positive note, I just got a message that the new motor mount arrived via UPS and is waiting for at the house!
Isn't Starboard just a brand name for HDPE? I'd think that you can get it a lot cheaper at other places than WM. Maybe somewhere like Walmart in the cookware section. Lots of cutting boards are simply slabs of HDPE. At least, I think it's the same stuff. Anybody KNOW differently?
The West Marine is in Burlington Vt. Yes, I can get the material shipped. Just the thought that I knew I wanted it and left the store w/o it just boils me.
The real issues was that it took forever to find the clamps I was looking for (the store was packed), so I spent all my time walking around and totally forgot about the starboard... Oh well. Next time I will put a post it note on my credit card!
John, It's funny, I have two cutting boards at home that are more or less starboard material. Ever since I have wanted to buy some of this stuff form my boat, I can not find any "cutting boards" that appear to have the same composition, nore the thickness. The boards I have at home are 1/2" thk. The cutting boards I have been seeing (Walmart, Target, Ikea, etc.) appear to be more of a hard (brittle) plastic.
I did nearly the same thing on Saturday costing myself a second drive to the boat (40+ mins each way). Forgot to bring home the tiller I'd taken down there for measurements. And who knows how many times I've walked out into the garage to do...something... My dad always figured he had Alzheimers when he did stuff like that, I think it's just a symptom of getting older, an irritating one.
I just bought a new video camera and it came with a host of little gadgets, one of which was a small remote control (small as a key fob). I was playing with the other night, then in the morning was looking to put it away with all the other tech goodies at home, and could not find it anywhere. I practically tore the house apart, thinking I put in some out of the way place for safe keeping (I tend to do that). I found it this morning. I was putting on my shoes and it was in one of the shoes. Somehow, it had fallen off the coffee table and into my shoe.
I really thought I was losing my mind. Thinking that I put it someplace and could not remember!!!
You're all fine. Sometimes I go down to the basement to get something and when I get down there I wonder "Why did I come down here?" Then I go back upstairs and remember.
Re cutting boards. We used this online outfit when I built a cockpit table and then my helmsman seat. Both are built using their white custom cutting board. They do any size and various thicknesses and will round the edges. They are quick and do a nice job. Neither item has had any color change after two years, both are white, so maybe they have UV protection on theirs.
I believe Starboard has UV inhibitors that make it unique and suitable for a marine use. There is a subtle difference in density or texture as compared to my Sam's Club cutting boards.
John, I'll be driving to upstate NY from Burlington on Monday (27th). I usually cross the lake at Rouse's Pt. and then drop down to Rt. 11. If it would help, I could swing by WM on my way out, pick up your starboard and meet you somewhere. I can never predict what time I get out of here but ideally would pass through Rouse's Pt between 12 and 1. Drop me an email if you want to discuss logistics.
It's starting to feel/look like spring. Lake temp is up to 38°F and white caps are on the bay.
Yes, in old age, memory is the second thing to go, and I can't remember the first . I'm blessed to have one West Marine store here in Richmond only ten minutes away, and TWO more in Deltaville fifteen minutes from my boat. I second the recommendations to order online from WM or Defender, but any excuse to go shopping for boat stuff is a good one!
That's especially the way Vicki and I feel about pilgrimages to Annapolis, which is about two hours away on a good day. Nap-town (motto: "A Drinking Town With A Sailing Problem") is the Mecca/Jerusalem of sailing, and Fawcett's Marine is the Holy of Holies of marine supply stores. (A respectful nod to all who feel the same way about Newport.)
