Sure, I'd love to be able to stand up in the cabin, but I can take a long 3 day weekend and go 50 miles each way.
If I were to move up to a 30 footer, it would probably cost me over twice what I paid for the Cat 25, and the cost of ownership would be at least 1.5 to 2 times my current budget.
Nope, looking up the cost-benefit curve, I think I'm at a local maximum with the C25
For the type of sailing I am able to do at this stage in my life, Persephone represents the ideal compromise between cost and size. I would love to have a C 28 Mk II or a C 309. However given my sailing venues, the fact that I generally am sailing solo, and that my sailing is limited to two day weekends (with the occasional three day weekend tossed in), it is hard to justify spending the significantly greater purchase and operating costs for the larger vessel
Maybe, someday, my use pattern will change, and a larger boat would be appropriate. Until that time, I think Stu has hit the nail on the head "find a boat you like, set it up right for your uses, care for it, and clean, maintain and sail it."
Thanks everyone for contributing to the thread. By the way, I think this forum by far is the best way of advocating for the 25' paradigm I know. The truth is were lucky to be boating at all. Recently I was interviewed by NBC. My boat is the 250 in the sling. I'm the one in the fly fisherman's hat my son Owen is holding the bike and my littlest one is the one I'm putting in the cockpit. Great clip! A friend is a wooden boat builder in Newport--things looked really bleak but are looking up a little. I've talked to some marina operators here--given the circumstances, they're doing better than they expected, based on spring engine work and slips rented... We'll see how many boats are on the hard in July.
