Call it beginner's luck. Armed with my new whisker pole (a painter's pole!), a tiny 110% genoa and a favorable phrf, 'Windsong' took third place in the cruising class of the Governor's Cup, an annual N.C. vs. S.C race held in Little River, SC. Four races over two days. If winds had been slight, we would have been in serious trouble, for sure, but winds were 15kts both days, dead in the strike zone for the rig. Thanks to this forum for the all advice on whisker poles and sail trim. (I never posted; just read old postings).
We celebrated by sailing 30 miles up the N.C. coast to Bald Head Island and stayed for two nights, Windsong's maiden cruise. I'll post some pics in the cruising forum. After five straight days on the boat I'm now back at my desk, rocking in my chair on non-existent waves and planning my next escape.
Work is over-rated.

Luck might have helped you in one or two races, but to do well in a 4-race regatta you had to have more than luck going for you. You must have done a lot of things very well. Congratulations!
