Our C-25 is on a bouy about 400 ft from the marina. We have a 8 foot inflatable for getting back and forth. Looking at the Minn Kota. Up to now we have had an Johnson 3hp which conked out.
-- Is this a viable alternative to a gas engine?
-- How much thrust is needed (two people going out and back to the bouy. 20 minutes RT. Sometimes there is a bit of chop.
-- Regular 12 volt? or a deep draw battery?
We would appreciate your experience and ideas. Many thanks, "Raven" Whidbey Island.
We have a 1982 Evinrude 2HP two stroke that runs well and we have the manuals. We don't use it much at all and would sell it if you are interested. $200.
My friend in the Narragansett Bay pushed an 8' Zodiac with a little electric motor for about 10 years. It's quiet and lightweight, but the need to put the battery in the dink each time is a real pain. Lifting the battery back up over the side of the C-25 is also hard work.
He replaced the electric motor a year or so ago with a 3hp outboard with an integral gas tank. Lightweight and simple.
This motor is also excellent backup for driving the big boat with the Zodiac lashed abeam. He can get the duo up to 4 knots after a while.
I've used a 30 lb thrust Minn Kota for the past 10 years to get to and from my mooring. I've had up for four people in my zodiac and the eletric motor pushed fine. The battery is a problem but no more than dealing with mixing gas, noise, etc. with an outboard. The Minn Kotas greatest asset is "quiet".
