We snapped our drive shaft and cracked the tiller near off the motor body. Ordering a new Tohatsu from OnlineOutboards tomorrow. Boat's holed up in Westport, MA, until it gets delivered (Home port: Oyster Bay, NY).
Question is, what do you do with an old motor that is maybe functional, but needs more repair work than its value?

That's a good one! No one has a Suzuki motor. And I can't say I'd recommend one, either. We've been talking about replacing it since we bought the boat, I just would have preferred to do so on my own terms.
If I could turn a "negative" into a "positive", I'd like to hear about the trip up to MA. I'm also a Long Island sailor, and I'd like to hear where I could take my boat if I ever get the comfort level to leave Great South Bay. (This is my first full season sailing)
I'm working on it. I'm trying to put an article together for The Mainsheet. A couple of years ago, we circled Long Island and hung out in Sag Harbor for a bit. That's one beautiful town.
UPDATE: OnlineOutboards was out of Tohatsu 9.8 motors. They're back ordered until July 25. I got the Nissan for $60 more. With the members' discount, it's still cheaper thn anywhere else I could find. Chris wanted me to mention that Tohatsu has a brand-spanking new model out with a high thrush prop and electric tilt. He said it's been out for about 3 weeks, they don't even have it listed on their website yet. It's about $2500. I thought about it, but decided I'm not old enough yet to fall prey to the temptation of electric tilt. The new motor should arrive in MA next week and then we'll be heading back west, probably stopping in Block Island.
Rich--your security is air-tight! As I replied to you on another thread, I tried to e-mail you (through this site) with a cell # for when you plan to pass through or stop at Mystic, Watch Hill, Stonington, etc. Your e-mail rejected me as not being on your "approved list", and then wouldn't even let me fill in the application to get on it. How do we do this?
Obviously I'm "no one" cause I have a 1989 8HP Suzuki. It came with the boat. Knock on wood (my noggin) it's worked fine for me for the past 1-1/2 years. Starts on the third pull usually and gets me in and out of the bay. The only thing I don't like about it is there is not much thrust in reverse. The good thing about it is no one is interested in stealing it!
Dave- It's Earthlink, they're a pain, but I do check my spam blocker religiously several times a day. I got your email and added you to my list so this shouldn't happen again. I fully plan on giving you a call! It may be a week or two before we head back that way, though. Plans are still in the wind.
