I have a friend who'll be starting later on one of the big boats.
The race started Monday at noon and yesterday it was very windy from the SW with fairly rough seas so it looks to me like they got a good ride hard on the wind.
Cool, thanks for the link. Nice to see those Catalina's in the hunt. Ken Roper (aka "The General"), who has done the Transpac single-handed 9 times, has moved here to Myrtle Beach at age 78, and I have been lucky enough to sail with him a few times, including an offshore, night race from Charleston to Little River. He did his last solo Transpac just last year, at age 77. He says that on the Transpac he gets 8 hours of sleep each night, except when he is in shipping lanes. It's a downwind race, of course, so he's got the chute up most of the way. Having finished the race each time, he then turns around and sails singlehanded back to SF. Ah, to be retired. I love his view of sailing, so different from my own: KISS and never lose your cool. I'm not sure that would fill the classes at the Colgate Sailing School, however, but it's good for me to remember.
