After years of lurking on this site wishing and dreaming we are finally ready to buy a boat. But we have not found the right boat on the west coast. (wk w/ trailer, pref dinnete) I seems via the internet I can see several on the east coast or in the great lakes area. My question is, is it feasible to have one trucked out to California? I just want to know if this is a $1000 proposition or a $5,000?
I sent an inquiry to a trucking company but they need to know the height, width, length, and weight. I assume the boat is 8'-6" max beam right? Weight with trailer is 7,000#. What is the length of the boat on the trailer and how high is it?
Another option would be to rent a truck one way to tow it myself.
I would estimate around 4K. Have you contackted Dudley boat haulers. I have delt with them and they are very good. If they have two boats comming they will give you a price break.
My boat and trailer are sitting outside the house right now, but it is late and I'm not going outside. I do know the beam is 8' and when on the trailer the fenders stick out at least 1 foot probably more (1/2 on each side). I think it is wide as my dullie. I measured the height once and found the top of the mast is 11 feet up, oh, mine is a fin keel. A friends swinger sits about 3 feet lower than mine. Doug, if the boat weighs 4.5k, including the trailer I would guess closer to the 7k lbs. Am thinking of taking the whole thing to the local land fill and seeing if I can get a weight on their scale. Good luck with the move if you do it.
As the cost of C25's aren't that great (relative), many are sold without brokers. I would try looking up classified advertisements on the west coast (and save your $4k for some fun upgrades after you get one).
There are two C25's currently listed in the classifieds of "Santana" (free local sailing rag). I would also check "The Log" (where the boat I bought six years ago was advertised as "this boat gets more luv'n than my wife") -- http://www.thelog.com, "Latitude 38" -- http://www.latitude38.com/index.html and "48 North" -- http://www.48north.com. You can usually pick up a hard copy of these free at your local West Marine, BoatUS, Boaters World, etc.
When I decided that I wanted a C25 I was quickly able to develop a list of boats available on the east coast - maybe as far west as mid-west and as far south as North Carolina. My sources including the Swap Meet from this web page and Soundings, I believe a NE Sailing Magazine. I sorted by age and price. And started looking.
I expect that something like that would work on the West Coast as well.
After buying osmepneo I had her moved from Nyack, New York to the Great Sacandaga Lake about 200 miles. Alcove Marine Rexford New York did the move. Cost $400. I met Dave at the yacht club in Nyack at 7:30, and already had the boat and cradle on his truck. At 2 that afternoon I arrived at the marina on the lake and the was in the water and rigged. Very pleased with that.
Alcove does national moving (I think).
All that said, I'd see about generating a list of available west coast boats that meet your parameters and as Richard said, save the money for productive sailing goodies.
Really? $4k! I was hoping is would be 1,000 - 1,500. I'd still like to get the height and length if anyone can tell me.
If it really is 4k then I'd more likely rent a truck and drive it back myself. My wife is actually hoping I find one in the great lakes area so she can go visit her sister.
I'd really like to find one on the West Coast. Thanks for the links Richard. I have a subscription to Latitude 38 but the other two I have book marked for frequent checking. (Actually I can't get the Log to load, it locks up my machine, I'll try from work)
Richard we are in San Luis Obispo, about halfway between SF and LA on the coast. The closest West Marine is either in Santa Cruz or Ventura both a couple of hours away for us. I hope to join you and Ed next year for a trip to Catalina. Your trip this year made us yearn for a boat even more.
Last night I measured my Trailrite trailer I had built last year. I got 8' 1.5" at the edges of the fenders. The front of the toung sticks about 2' forward of the bow and the mast at the top is about 1' back from the stern adding up to 28' total. BTW my trailer does not have an extension. When I got the trailer last year the boat was 11' from ground to top of mast, sitting on the bow pulpit. Again this is for my fin keel boat. Haven't taken it to a scale yet. Hope this helps.
As Santana has no web site, here are the two ads (but I don't know anything about them):
'78 -- Excellent condition, very clean. Johnson 9.9 w/ low hours, lots of extras, dinnette model, nice interior, Autohelm, VHF, full racing and cruising equipment, new batteries. $3,950/OBO. 310-549-2882 or 760-365-2940.
'82 -- Swing keel, Trail-Rite boat trailer with slip at Big Bear Lake for season. Bristol condition. New bottom paint, 3 bags, all ground tackle and safety gear. Call for list of extras. Asking $8,500. 760-240-4607.
As there are no West Marine, etc. stores near you, are there any local marine stores at all? Morro Bay should have something, or try Lake Naciamento area. Also, marinas or boat brokers sometimes have copies of Santana, The Log, etc. Otherwise, you might try calling the publications and ask where they get distributed locally.
You might try searches on www.boattraderonline.com, or www.iboats.com, or www.boats.com. I found my boat on Boat trader online this spring. All these sites allow you to search for specific boats within specific geographic areas.
There is a Catalina 25 for sale in the marina where my boat is slipped. It is a trad interior and I'm not sure what keel config. it has but I can find out some more details if you like. Vegas is alot closer than the Great Lakes!!

Earl thanks for the links. I have amased quite a collection but I was still missing one of them.
Richard, thanks for the Ads. I can get Santana and Latitude here if I go down to the Port and get one before they are all gone. I just don't get there very often. That is why I finally subscribed to Latitude, I kept missing them.
Nate, is the triad interior the one with the L shaped setee? (How do you spell that anyway!) That would work for us if it met our other criteria. Since the water here off the coast can get pretty rough I'd like to have the wing keel. (Also the extra inches of headroom would help as my wife and I are both tall) I need a trailer and would prefer the dinnette interior. I have never seen a wing keel dinnette model listed, does anyone know, did the wing model only come in the traditional interior?
Todd, Got a couple more bits of info regarding the boat I mentioned last night. Seems she is an early 80's fin-keel with a trailer. The interior is traditional in the sense that it has stbd/port settees and a table that folds down from the bulkhead. Still don't know what the guy wants for her but I will find out. Nate
I haven't read the article, but the new issue of SAIL has an article on moving a boat. It appears that its appropriate for "big" boats, but it may offer wisdom for moving a c25.
