You should likely have a spare "emergency tiller" on board. These are found in most Lowes/Home depot stores this time of year, labelled as "Wheelbarrow Handles," and sold in DIY 4-packs. 2 lengths of roughstock per pack, can be whittled down to 4 very serviceable emergency tillers.
Once you have located/made your emergency tiller, you are all set to take your usual tiller home and refinish it.
