First I apologise for asking a C22 specific question here - but they don't have a great forum like this one. I have been searching for a C22 swing keel or C25 WB. I checked out a C22 swing keel this weekend and under the cabin floor boards I saw some cracks that were about 1/32 inch wide between the hull and what I would call rib like structures that are at a 90 degree from the swing keel trunk. These are not hair line cracks and extended about six inches along the hull/rib like structure junction. These "ribs" were part of the original design and not after thoughts. The boat was in great condition otherwise. There was another set aftward near the companionway that exhibited the same symptoms. Are these cracks a symptom of a more serious problem like improper lifting or supporting of the swing keel???? Thanks

You're pretty thorough there Frank! If I'm hearing you right, you're talking about stringers. Yes, you certainly should be concerned - but I think a competent surveyor should make the final jugdement. I'd be concerned about water that might have seeped into the cracks - eventually rotting the wood stringer.
I've seen the companionway cracks before - those would not be quite as critcal - it's probably the gelcoat cracking because of the fibreglass flexing - again a surveyor would be a better judge.
BTW, if you're considering a 22 or 25, we've had numerous discussions regarding 22s verse 25s and the majority always votes for the 25 . . .
Good luck

Hey, let's take a vote of C-25 owners to see whether they prefer the C-25 or the C-22... <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Frank, I'd be suspicious that the C-22 took some pounding on a trailer that may have caused those cracks at the stringers. The trailer cradle or whatever should support the keel, and the keel should be relaxed so it sits on the supports--if it doesn't, that will contribute greatly to the stresses on the hull. I second the motion to get a pro to eyeball it--or walk away.

BTW, the C-25 doesn't have a water-ballasted model--just a cast iron swing, a fin, and a wing that raplaced the swing in later years. The newer C-250 offers a WB model, but aside from the length, it's a very different boat as you may know.
