I have need for some penetrating epoxy to repair a handrail on our house. Nobody in town carries Git Rot which is my usual. I do have West Brothers System epoxy and #206 hardener. Is that, without fillers, the equivalent of a penetrating epoxy? Will it do the job? I have drilled a series of 1/4" holes throughout the rot area.

We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.

Randy,
West Systems is still kind of honey-like in it's consistency unless it's been warmed. Warming it is a two edged sword though, it's going to gel or "kick" much faster when it's warm. If you're looking for a penetrating epoxy, West Systems would not be my first choice. I use it all the time, just not for that application. If you think with the 1/4" holes you can get the epoxy into all the places it needs to be, you may well do fine with it. However...

In your case, I'd probably be looking at CPES. It's not cheap, but you'll use it on the boat as well. A quart package (a pint each of resin & catalyst) will go a long way. My brother swears by it for his bow making. It's got a long working time, and I'd tend toward the cold weather formula, mostly because I do most of my repair work when it's colder, since you're a bit further south, you might want the warm weather formula.

Randy - there is a product called "Petrifier" that makes wood become like concrete. Their website is www.pcepoxy.com
