hello all. I just purchased a 1980 c25 SR, swing keel, I sailed her for the first time all the way home.. 75 miles without a hitch. I am super pleased. I stopped along the way to check everything little by little. I have a quick question about the anode on the swing keel. I take it it is the round piece attached to the keel with a bolt. Now as i was cleaning the keel i noticed that it appears the only thing that is left of it is a rusty "footprint" of where it used to be. Can that be? has it rusted away? is there a procedure to replace it? and how urgent is it? i plan to take the boat out f the water in a couple months to re-do the bottom. should i wait till then to replace it?

I'm sure that i'll have many more questions and pics in the days, weeks, months to come ;)

Welcome, Marco... Sounds like the boat has been without an annode on the keel for a while--are you in salt water? If so, the annode is especially important for protecting the cable and its attachment to the keel, as well as the keel itself, from electrolytic corrosion. You can wait, but when you do get her out, inspect and consider replacing the cable--it's a very important maintenance item. The annode is meant to destroy itself ("sacrificial annode") over time, but should be replaced long before it disappears.

As I understand the purpose of the anode is to be sacrificed. The water environment eats up the anode, protecting the keel. From what you discribed I would think it prudent to replace it. It sounds like you have no anode protecting your keel.

Thanks for the tips.
BTW, yes, i am in salt water. The cable seems to be in ok shape except for where it attaches to the keel itself. The end bit of the wire is not splitting or anything but it is a little more rough than on the rest of the cable.. I'll have to take her out this weekend and double check that it is ok.
