Orson Wells...er..George Orwell must be turning over in his grave
I'm lucky that though I'm out in a very rural area I can get DSL. There always seem to be some local dial up companies around though that have plans under $10.
I also live outside of town. 4 years ago AT & T came by and bought a right of way across my property for fiber optic. Still no joy. Until last summer I used dial-up because it was all I could get unless I wanted to spring for cable. AOL was $9.95 a month. It was fine for basic commo. I finally bit the bullet and got cable. I would hate to go back to dial-up, but I would if I had to. It works fine for the routine stuff like this. I think some of them are cheaper than AOL abut am not tech savvy enough to know.
Looks like I am moving both jobs and addresses (again). When I left the company I was with at the beginning of this thread, I put out 3 resumees and got 3 offers. The best of the three was for a place about an hour and a half from home, and took longer than the place I am currently at to respond, so I turned them down (since I had already accepted this offer). So I turned them down.
Last week they sweetened their offer, and came back with a new position that offers a lot of perks. I handed in my resignation here on Tuesday, and it looks like we will be relocating the boat, family, everything. SWMBO can quit her job and stay home with the kids now. That means we can be a one car family and not commute as soon as we get everything relocated - we are giving ourselves a year to get there.
The new office is walking distance to Lake Ontario. Anyone care to recommend marinas and YC's in the Toronto area? At one point I had built a spreadsheet of marinas across the GTA, maybe I should resurrect it.
Another communications option that might work is connecting through your cell phone. ESPECIALLY if your employer is paying your cell phone bill I got a Sprint device that plugs into a USB port and connects pretty much anywhere in the US. I live out in the sticks too (no High Speed, no cable TV) but I can still hit cell connectivity.
Now I'm sorry for my remark about Toronto developers in the other topic. But, it is a crowded place and prices reflect that. I can't offer info on GTA marinas because I don't get there often enough. Give you joy on your new situation.
