After spending the weekend cleaning mildew off virtually every surface in the cabin, I decided that I needed better ventilation. I bought a 4" Nicro solar powered/battery backup fan. I was going to use it to replace my existing deck hatch fan, but then I got to thinking that maybe I should leave the deck hatch fan and put the new one somewhere else. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

PO had a vent cover in place in the main cabin. I removed the cover and replaced it with a Nicro solar vent. Not sure where I would have located it as a first choice but I have found that the existing location works fine and from the deck side, the location poses no issues with jib sheets, etc getting hung up on it since it is just aft of the mast.

Michael,

After suffering the same mildew problem, I installed a Nicro day/night solar/battery fan. I must say, the difference is moisture/mildew/odor is amazing. I didn't have a vent or other hole already cut, so I cut a new hole forward of the mast, in the centerline of the boat. This puts the vent in the head. I was really or a place that wouldn't be stepped on and would be out of the way, but the added benefit is the head gets fresh air constantly.

It's a great addition and I'm sure you'll be glad you added this to your boat!

I put mine as far forward as possible -- between the skylight and the anchor well -- in the belief that it would maximize the air travel through the boat. Since putting it in, my mildew problems have been little to none.

Nothing wrong with where Brooke put his, but keep in mind that humidity balances itself extremely quickly in an airspace, so practically wherever you exhaust the damp air, the incoming drier air will lower the humidity in the cabin. I put my solar vent in the head, which in my boat is right by the companionway. I've had absolutely no mold or odor problems... (where's some wood to knock?!?)

The location of my ventilation fan is dead center of the boat ahead of the mast. Looking at the fan from inside of the boat, the vent is just before the forward berth -- in the head hallway.

Want to know where NOT to put the fan? hahaha, the PO put mine center of the boat in the head area. If you're in there looking towards the sink it'll snag your hair. Just noticed this during the Labor Day outing.

I always felt the deck was too small so I used a passive vent and put it in the anchor locker. I used a stainless vent so I would not have to worry about the anchor placement in the locker. Heat will set up a natural flow so I did not bother with the powered model. Plenty of air comes in the hatch board area and lenty left the anchor locker.

In a C25 placing it on the port side over head of the head area next to the forward bulkhead, it does not grab my hair. I have it set to exhaust the air, so the fresh air is pulled in from the hatch boards.

Wow, lots of good ideas. Would anyone leave the current fan (which is in the deck hatch over the V berth) in place?

What kind of "fan" is it? If not solar, maybe you just want to mount the new vent there--no new holes in the boat. The key is to have it running overnight so it exhausts the moist daytime air before it and the boat cool off. The air that's drawn in is drier--it has already dropped its moisture as dew. One solar vent is usually all a C-25 needs to accomplish the exchange.

Is replacing the battery pretty much self explanatory? I noticed mine isn't running at night anymore.

It's simple--mine is a C-sized NiCad--they don't last forever. NiMH or Lithium would probably be better.

Mine came with a vent somewhat on the starboard side not quite over the sink and opposite the head. An ideal plae. I just took out the old fan and inserted the Nicro solar/battery powered fan. Mildew problem solved and I don't have a problem with the hair in that location nor would I if I had any.
