Hi Ya'll,

Okay here's the dope:

1983 Catalina 25.

Fin keel.

Keel nuts and bolts are shiny.<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

bilge is bone dry.<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Does anyone know if the keel would be made of lead or cast iron?

Are the nuts and bolts stainless steel?

Bonus question: how many gerbils will fit in the port cockpit locker?<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Paul,

You can use a magnet to find out whether the keel is iron or lead. I can only guess that the nuts and bolts are stainless steel. Also, the lead keel is much smoother and more regularly shaped than the cast iron keel. The iron casting is rather crude, and faired with fiberglass. As I recall, the changeover from cast iron to lead happened at about 1983 or 1984, but I don't remember the year for sure.

As for the gerbils, it depends on whether you are talking about the English Garden Gerbils (644), or the Brazilian Fighting Gerbils (2).

Steve: For the English Garden Gerbils, you're off by at least a factor of 10! I'd fit in there with 644 of them. (Hey, that sounds like fun!) <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

Paul: I know '84s and '85s are encased lead. Shiny bolts and nuts sound like the best evidence it's the lead keel with stainless bolts. Most cast iron keels look like it--some chipping, pitting, rusting, and cracks at the joint--while the lead/fiberglass keels are smooth, rust-free, and show no seam at the hull. The glass keels also seem sharper around the edge of the bottom. But the magnet knows best.

As a previous owner of a 1983 fin keel I can say absolutly that I dont know. I do know that as described a good magnet will tell you. One other bit of information. Catalina mixed and matched hardware. You might find stainless bolts and stainless nuts but mild steel washers. Or even mild steel nuts. The magnet will also tell the tale here to. My bildge was as you described always dry with minimal rust.
I did strip my hull all the way down when I did the bottom epoxy barrier coat. The joint to hull had no cracks. Be sure to inspect the bottom of the keel for damage from grounding. Easy fix if you find any. I dont know about gerbils but I do know a full grown man will fit. Ive been in there a few times to clean up.
