Is is appropriate to keep the masthead light ON while sailing at night?

I want to light up my windex. With the masthead light on the reflective tabs are visible.

I always thought the masthead light meant I was anchored. But, I've seen others sailing with it on.

What is correct?

However, this should give you a little quick help....

First, a boat is not considered anchored until her running lights are off, regardless of whether the anchor light is on. Many sailors on the great leakes use their anchor light to light their windex at night and according to most of the coast guard guys I talked to, its the least of their worries and they aren't going to mess with you for it. However, per the link above, you could easily be construed as a power boat from numerous angles...

Depending on the boat, some of those masthead lights aren't anchor lights either. (I am not saying all...just some) I know of 2 boats (evelyn 32 and a C&C 99) that have a small flashlight sized bulb up there for purpose of lighting the windex. (These were owner installed for long night races...)..

Anyway, a better way to solve your lighting the windex problem is to learn to sail without it... go by the feel of the helm, and the feel of the wind on your face. I gurantee once you get the hang of it without the windex you'll never want to go back.....
