I want to thank all who have helped me through my first year of sailing. I truly enjoyed this past summer on the boat, no mechanical failures like I had with the former stinkpot, and i used a total of 6 gals of fuel.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Now that the boat is out i did a close inspection of the keel, because i dont have a trailer under her this year i was able to clearly see the areas in question.

The cable replacement looks to be an easy job, but i am not sure about the pivot pin. I see (4) bolts in the area of the pivot pin, do these get loosened with a support under the keel? Or do these just gain access so as to visually inspect the pivot pin?

Hi Frank,

You're right ... replacing the cable & turning ball is a pretty straightforward job.

I haven't done anything to the pivot pin, but I think even inspecting it would be quite a job. The four bolts you see are the only thing that holds the 1500 lb keel to the bottom of the boat. I am replacing the four bolts because one was missing ... Catalina Direct suggested I replace all of them.

The bolts are SS 1/4 inch, 1 1/2 inches long with a lock washer. When you replace them you are supposed to use Lock-Tite to help keep them from falling out. The Lock-Tite won't work on SS without a special spray primer (Catalina Direct sends both the Lock-Tite and the spray). The other caution is to make sure you don't torque the bolts down too tight ... the receiving nuts are molded into the fiberglass, and if you tighten the bolts too much you'll loosen the nuts inside the glass.

There is a neat method for lowering the keel ... you use threaded rods to slowly lower the keel until you can get in there to work on the pivot pin or inspect it. I've been searching 'til I'm about to go blind, and I can't find that photo ... AGAIN. Someone helped out last time this topic came up and supplied a photo of the threaded rods ... hopefully someone can post it to this thread.

When you replace the bolts you might consider reworking the pivot itself. There is a kit you can order from Catalina Direct.
