Ignoring the 'what type of keel is it' issue.

On the C25 thread, there's a posting that includes the option to 'Lock down the Swing Keel'

On the 250WB the swingfing is not that heavy (about 150lbs?)

If the boat was knocked down (and divorce ensued) would the keel swing backup into the horizontal position?

We don't have a keel lock down option, only a lock up (ok, not a lock, we just have to pull it up and make the halyard to a cleat)

My belief is that the keel does not make that much impact on the righting of the boat, the water ballast (assuming it's full!) has the greater impact.

So would there be any advantage of a swing lock?

I can see the downside - those stop signs in biscayne bay!

Just a thought.

Paul

It wouldn't matter if you locked down your centerboard because it's the water ballast that will bring you back if you get knocked down. I can only see negatives to locking the centerboard down in your skinny water. The centerboard is there to help against drifting to leeward, not for its righting ability.

I once was told the centerboard had a 100# weight in the tip--just enough to get it to go down and stay down, but negligible ballast. I suspect a lock could cause unnecessary damage if you struck something.

This seems to fall into the "if it aint broke don't fix it" category or some such thing.

One of the best things for those of us who sail on "thin water" is that the CB is free "kick up" which it couldn't do if it were "locked" down. A "self-adjusting" feature if you will.

Best Regards, Carl Schroeder,
