I want to purchase a "standing rigging tension gauge" and wanted to know the size of the stays. Also, can someone recommend a reasonably priced gauge and model number?
I have noticed on my boat - a 1980 model, the cap, fore and aft shrouds are all the same diameter, but on other boats I've seen the cap shroud is slightly larger. Does anyone else have the cap shroud the same as the fore and aft lowers or am I the odd one out on this? I cant recall which model Loos gauge I have but none of the relief-sample cut outs in the side of the gauge exactly match the actual shroud size.
My forestay, backstay and upper shroud are 3/16". The upper shroud is suppose to be 3/16" dia 1x19 w/ 5/16" threaded terminal. Pin to end of terminal = 29'-11" +/- 1/2" (this is per Kent Nelson of Catalina Yachts). The forward and aft lower shrouds are 5/32". My boat has been heavily modified over its lifetime, so I don't know if these are factory sizes, except for the upper shroud which I inquired about at Catalina. I've not verified the upper shroud dimension yet so take that for what it is, but I need to replace mine so I'm going to purchase some soon.
Ok. I guess I'll get a PT2 Gauge even though the "lowers" are 5/32"?
If my understanding is correct, the forestay and backstay tension are basically adjusted from the "backstay aduster" and the forestay is supposed to be 31'10" , "pin to pin"?
The upper and lower stays are going to be tuned/tensioned by using a the PT2 gauge, even though some of them are a smaller diameter than recommended by the PT2 Gauge?
I'm basically trying to figure out of I need to buy a seperate gauge for the "lower stays"?
I have both size gauges, but I don't think you need them. Most of the tuning information I've read depend more on visual and measurement clues rather than tension settings. However, I do use my gauges to record setups that seem to work good. The majority of the tuning guides I've read seem to focus on "mast rake" rather than forestay measurement. I've never read anywhere what the mask rake is with the 31'-10" forestay, but that is how I set up my rig the last time and it works. EP Sails has a great tuning guide on their website and I think it is also on the WYC website. There is also a good article from the 1983 Spring issue of "Mainsheet". I'd recommend you tune your rig according to one of the tuning guides and then just check and record your tensions after you think you have it set up right. For that purpose probably the #2 gauge would work for all wire sizes. Post what you end up with, I'll measure my current set up and we can compare numbers.
Current measurements with Loos Gauge's. Old Loos 90 series gauge - upper shroud measured 30 on the scale, aft lower shroud measured 5 on the scale. Loos PT-2 gauge - upper shroud measured 32 on the scale, aft lower shroud measured 47 on the scale.
