If you are thinking distress, an electric signal must be automated to send a continuous SOS. If you are thinking back up nav lights, it would depend on the angle of coverage and range. I've never carried a back up nav light system and the likelihood of implementing it is so low that I still won't. Replacement bulbs, fuses, and wire are in my kit.
Sorry guys, I wasn't clear. Last season in our overnight race, the batteries were dangerously low when we started, and got much worse through the night. I was thinking this would make a good backup if we ever have reason to repeat that performance.
Agreed on the distance issue.
I did see th epersonal beacons and have notified my crew that everyone onboard is to have one on their lifejacket when we do th erace this year. I may buy a bevvy of them and keep them in the dumpster. I like night sailing, but finding someone out there would be awful.
