Well folks, the weather is warming and I have a renewed interest in spending more quality time with my boat. I noticed the other day that my SR Mariner brand depth meter was flashing an 'F' and providing some erratic depth readings. Since the instruments are original, I have to assume the 'F' stand for 'Finished' as in "I'm finished with this life, and ready for the next." Anyhow, I'd like your advice on replacement knot and depth guages for the old SR Mariner units. Can I 're-use' the through-hull fittings with another brand, or should I insert plugs and go with a GPS based knot meter and a transom mounted depth meter? Can I install new, round instruments into the exiting 4" holes on the cabin bulkhead?
I checked their website and called; they no longer sell marine instruments. They will service them, however. The faces of my gauges are weathered and crazed (I think that's the correct term for hazy and cracked in appearance)
In regards to the SR Mariner depthfinder, I believe there are only 1 or 2 mfrs that sell a similar sized gage that will fill the large bulkhead diameter hole of the SR Mariner gage. Believe Signal sells one that fits but others will have to chime in on that or check the web for details. But I would seriously consider switching to a fishfinder and install a swing arm bracket on the cabin side of the companionway. Fishifnders can cost under $100...$200+ depending on features and most have models in all price ranges with a transducer that can be installed inside the hull. I used a glob of a toilet bowl wax ring and pushed the transducer into it trying to get all air bubbles out and then overlapping the transducer edges with the glob for a snug attachment. I located the transducer up forward close to the original depthfinder transducer. I snipped the wires on the original transducer and then threaded the new transducer wires close to the hull side thru crevices in the cabin bulkhead. Has worked fine for now ...over 4 years.
Do you keep the boat in the water through the winter? This is just a guess but if you do maybe the F stands for Fouled as in the transducer is all gunked up and needs to be cleaned off. This would explain the erratic readings.
