I would like to add a whisker pole set up to my 250. I currently only have a 110% jib, but may add a larger lighter sail in the future, or some kind of down wind sail. I am assuming that I will only need a light weight pole and it should be adjustable. I am wondering how high to mount the ring to the mast to attach the pole, your experience do what seems like a good height? What are the advantages of a spike end versus latching device? Thanks in advance for sharing you knowledge and expericence.

We use the Forespar HD6-12 whisker pole. We also have a track on the mast that allows for adjusting the height of the mast ring. I believe the mast track is 3' long.
I lost a whisker poles with a spike on the leech end and a latch on the mast end when it came loose from the mast. I don't know if the latch broke or if it was not properly secured to the mast ring. Anyway I now prefer latches on both ends for being less likely to be deep sixed, but a spike on one end is quicker to handle. So it's a toss-up. My mast ring is about elbow high. The performance of my 135% genoa seems not sensitive to the ring height. You can attach the ring to an 12 to 18 inch plastic half pipe and tape it to the mast to try out positions. Tether the whisker pole so you don't lose it should the temporary ring setup break loose. Defender.com Item #600459 will do the job on a Catalina 250 with 135% Genoa.
You want the pole to be level-to-pointing-slightly-downward when deployed. The ADJ6-12HD should work well for the 110 and maybe the 135. It will be too short for anything larger.
