Forgive me if this has been covered already but I'm not much for digging in the archives.
Why did you name your boat what you did?
My dad's MacGregor 25 was "Blew by You" pun on a Linda Rondstat song, but it also sounds kinds dirty, right up there with "polishing the mast".
I am thinking of a name for my boat, I know in the forum it's already named "Fandango", but that's not final. Fandango is my favorite old Kevin Costner movie. One of the definitions of Fandango is "A foolish act" which is sooo appropriate.
My other nominees for my 30yr old nameless boat are..
<b>Moonshadow</b> Cat Stevens song from way back
<b>G.I. Joe</b> (after a recently deceased cousin named Joe who was in the army)
<b>Jenny </b> (my wife's name, however she hates the boat so why bother)
<b>Banana</b> (it's just fun and goofy, but I wouldn't want to dispatch a distress call for a sinking Banana, the coast guard would just laugh.
<b>Starbuck</b> (moby dick reasons, not coffee)
<b>Brahma Fear</b> (my favorite Buffett song from 1973 though I would have to explain it to everyone)
Fandango is still my favorite, the others are all close 2nds. Tell me what you think or do you have a better idea?
Andy Ballard 1980 Hull #2122 SR/SK "Brahma Fear" Moultrie, GA
Just remember that you'll have to say the name over the radio someday. If the receiver has to say "Say again, couldn't get the name." it could be problematic. The original owner of my boat named her "Kaija" (pronounced Ky Ya)which turns out to be Latvian for seagull. Must have had some meaning to him but on the radio it becomes: "Kappa Alpha Indigo Juliet Alpha" after the second "say again"!
We are going through the same process. Currently our boat is Four Sea Sons. We might have kept it if it was actually Four Seasons, but since I'm the only male in the family, and there's only three of us anyway, the current name makes no sense.
So far, we've come up with these possiblities.
Callalily - Pro: These were the flowers my wife had at our wedding. We both like it. Con: I worry about pronouncability (if I may coin a term). Bit of a tongue twister with all those L's.
Baby Girl - Pro: This is what I call my daughter and would be an alternative to naming the boat after her. Con: My daughter is my baby girl not the boat. Would hate for anyone to ever think otherwise. We thought of naming it Baby Girl II for that reason, but we decided against it.
Princess MG - Pro: MG are my daughter's initials, so, again, this is a variation on naming the boat after her. Also she loves princesses and hence, would feel invested in the boat. Con: I just don't like it. I do like just Princess, but my wife doesn't like that. So its an impasse.
And there's a bunch we already rejected for various reasons. Third Wind. Frodo. Nutmeg (from Obrien's Nutmeg of Consolation).
Anway, for the OP, I'd stick with Fandango. I really like the sound of it.
As a long-time Buffett fan, predating the "parrotheads" by several decades, I like the name "Brahma Fear." For those who haven't heard this rather obscure song, Buffett starts out telling us he'd like to be a rodeo cowboy, but he's afraid of bulls... quite the conundrum. He easily accepts his fate and goes on to explain he's found the deeper meaning life - "find me and you'll find my sound" - a reference to his time spent in what was then the sleepy village of Key West and the effect the place has on all who visit. A simpler time and place where differences are enjoyed and embraced, the weather is mostly agreeable, and everyone stops at the end of Duvall Street to applaud the glorious sight of the sun setting setting. I think the best two verses are these:
"Yes I own a sailing boat It slides across the sea And some folks say I'm part of it And I know, it's part of me
And when I'm feelin' solitaire It lets me be alone And when I want to habitate It carries me back home"
Sums it nicely and I couldn't agree more. Brahma Fear... it tells a little story. I like that.
"Fandango" is a great name as well. I'd distance myself from "Jenny" mainly because "it's just tha purtiest name in tha whole wide world", it is very evocative of Forrest Gump.
Tom... finally someone else who likes the Country and Western Buffett before all the parrothead nonscense. Now it's just too commercial. Listened to Living and Dying in 3/4 time for so many years in my childhood as well as Changes in Lat/Attitude.
Reminds me of hot summer days traveling down to Panama City with no ac and before there were any 4 lanes for our annual 2weeks of camping/sailing at St. Andrews.
Sounds like we're living in a parallel universe. I cut my teeth on "Living and Dying", "Changes in Latitudes", "A1A", "White Sportcoat", and "Havana Daydreamin'" on a road trip from Brimingham, Alabama to Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia back in 1976 or '77. My dad had been turned on to Buffett by his brother who lived in south Florida and had seen Buffett in Key West.
Anyway, my sister and I listened to every song JB had ever recorded on that two-week vacation. On 8-track! To this day, whenever I hear "Railroad Lady" I think of Digby Bay scallops I had in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia! Ahh, great memories.
I can also relate to the "450 AC" on the beach runs (Dad called it '450 AC' as in you roll down all four windows and go 50 mph, which was as fast a Datsun station wagon pulling a pop-top camper, 2 adults and 2 kids, could go - straight and level). We spent our beach time in Gulf Shores, AL back when it too was a sleepy little village - before all the condos. Reminds of another of my favorite JB songs "When the Coast Is Clear."
Andy, Those names are all good, except for "Jenny." If you named it "Jenny," everyone would be calling you "Forest Gump." Seriously, just stay away from stupid puns and dirty jokes and you'll be good. Besides, the day after you put the new name on your boat, you will think of the perfect name. I look forward to learning what you decide.
I was in Newport News Va. in (I believe)'76 while the submarine that I was stationed on was undergoing a refit. It was there that I remember first hearing some guy named Jimmy Buffett doing "God's Own Drunk" on the local FM station about 2 in the morning when I was ....drunk. The next morning I went searching for Buffett albums at the local record shop. At the time I had a Sunfish and used to sail it on the James River and Hampton Roads with a portable Panasonic cassette player strapped to the mast with cassettes taped from the albums I had found at the record shop. Now I have a satellite radio on the Emery C and it carries Mr. Buffett's own radio program 24/7. I must be getting really old.... As far as boat names are concerned, I've never liked cutesy boat names especially on sailboats. I think boat names should have some particular association with the owner's life. The Emery C is named after my wife, Emery Cameron Keeler. A beautiful name from a beautiful woman for a beautiful boat. If I ever get the bigger boat I fully expect to name her the "Emery C II." (Of course, if I get a bigger boat I'll probably be single again so maybe the whole issue is moot).I also own an old 22' Mako center console that is named "Nobody's Fool" My first wife was named April and I was going to call it "April's Fool". 12 years ago when I first got the boat,I had contacted a local signmaker to design an April's Fool" logo for it. When my marriage started going south, I called him to cancel the order. He said "Well I guess you're nobody's fool now." That kind of hit a nerve and my Mako became "Nobody's Fool". It also happens to be one of my favorite movies.
Greetings from Yorktown, VA. I just took possession of a nameless boat (1979 model)... I have it since Tuesday. My wife and I have been discussing names and are leaning towards "Unbridled". This is a take off from my last name. Any thoughts from you all, and is there a ceremony in naming a boat, in particular one that does not have a name?
Names need to have personal meaning, be easy to say and recognize on VHF, and not be crude. Its wide open after that, but it is true that you will probably come up with the perfect name the day after applying the one you choose. I think its best to use the boat a bit before naming, but the gods of the sea may not agree. A first naming for a boat that hasn't had a name applied is really a first commissioning and shorter than an official renaming. You are supposed to put a gold or silver coin under the mast step, but that is more difficult now that we don't have silver coins.
I first discovered Buffet while bicycling and camping through the keys nearly 40 years ago. A lot has changed since Coconut Telegraph.

Just make sure that you follow the renaming ritual, it's very important. Also a good excuse for sharing a bottle or two of champaign with your neighbors. Here is the process:
You could have '<font face="Times New Roman">JENNY HATES IT!</font id="Times New Roman"> or <font face="Times New Roman">8675309</font id="Times New Roman">

Checked out the song. It is great!!!!. I'll add it to my Buffet collection.
I hate to hijack Andy's perfectly good thread, but Dave R's point about the latest Buffett offering is right on! In my opinion, JB returns to his roots with "Take the Weather With You" in many songs.
My folks live a few miles from where Hurricane Ivan made landfall and the destruction is beyond explanation. I got down there as soon as I could after the storm and to see people who had lost everything was breathtaking - what really gets to you is shear magnitude of destruction. For that reason, I think "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On" is one of Buffett's best songs ever. As soon as I heard the song, I sat down with my guitar and learned to play it that very afternoon. And having done my share of bartending on the beach and more than my share of beer drinking down there, "Bama Breeze" really resonates with me. Although the video was filmed in Mississippi post Katrina, I believe JB is singing about the "Flora-Bama Lounge and Package" (motto: Do it on the line!) which straddles the Alabama/Florida state line and was leveled after Hurricane Ivan.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I've been a "Parrothead" since long before they existed, started listening to Jimmy with "Son of a son of a sailor" and pretty much have everything he's ever done. I think I've seen him in concert about a dozen times in half a dozen states.
Driving cross country with my dad after I got out of the USN in the mid-eighties, JB & Willy Nelson were the only thing we could agree on for tunage. I still vividly recall his reaction to the prelude to Pink Floyd's "Time" on "Dark Side of the Moon" which I was listening to while he snoozed in the passenger seat. When all the alarm clocks went off I thought I was going to have to peel him off the roof of the car.
I lived in Hawaii for a good number of years, and I like Hawaiian names. It is great to see them in Maine or Croatia! And they ARE in both places. Some great names--- Pu'u o Hoku (Hill of the stars) http://www.yachtsee.com/boatnameshawaiian.htm a great series. I wanted to name my boat "Auwekamanu" Roughly translated, "Oive,The Bird" or maybe "Behold The Bird". My wife said " who'd even be able to say that? -- So, with the admiral's help, it is "Annatomical" not Hawaiian, but not "Chicken Noodle Sloop" either.
Andy, I think you have the right idea - go with the things, places, music, people you love. Favorite tunes are popular. Does that mean you have to wear out the song everytime you go out sailing?
Some people love ideas, concepts and ideals too. Names like Freedom, Liberty, and in my case, Voyager, appealed to me.
Bible or religious terms are big in some regions: Genesis, the garden of eden, exodus, samadhi, bodhisattva . . .
Some of us love the romance of words from foreign languages, or general terms in foreign languages like Primavera, Pax, Dosvidanya, La Dolce Vita
Intelligibility is very important. Remember, you want fellow boaters to be able to repeat your name even after they've had several beers.
Wow. It looks like I wouldn't have to explain "Brahma Fear" to everyone after all. I do however have to explain to most of the S. GA natives why the hell I would ever want a sailboat. It's easy to find my house, just drive to Moultrie, GA and look for the yacht. One guy asked, "when you get to where you're going, how do you turn around and come back?" I just sighed and said, "That's what the motor is for."
This is a fun thread, for now I think I have been swayed into using "Brahma Fear" due to all your enthusiasm. I imagine it will be the only boat with that name ever. I think Buffett would smile if he saw it painted on the transom.
