I need to replace my old traveler as it is too hard to release and bring up to weather when needed so it becomes a two-person job when the wind kicks up.
Does anyone have a recommendation on brand and size/part number of traveler and track rail that works well for the Capri 25?
Harken has a program on their website called Compu-Spec that will guide you through the equipment selection/replacement process pretty effectively. My boat has an upgraded traveler that uses a mechanism to simplify the handling of the traveler. I'm not sure if it is Harken, but it works pretty good. I think the term used for this type of traveler is "windward sheeting". It works differently depending on which tack the boat is on, the mainsheet connection to the traveler releases the leeward jam cleat automatically so you can pull in the traveler more easily. It certainly facilitates single handed operation although I find it difficult to release the traveler during puffs and usually use the mainsheet instead. There may be newer systems that are easier to handle now.
+1 on Harken Windward Sheeting set up as a good way to go. The Compu-spec deal on the Harken site will tell you which one you need(I think there are 3 sizes, and the smallest one will handle the Capri 25 loads).
I would hate to go back to sailing without the Windward Sheeting traveler, especially single/short handed. It works really well.
The Bus also has a "windward sheeting" system. Not OEM, but it's not exactly current either. But it's definitely better than the stock setup. I believe it's Harken, but not 100%.
It works really well to release it just before the traveler unloads in the tack, and use that last bit of pressure to move the car to the other side. Then pick it up and set it for the new tack before the sail loads up and you dont have to worry about the load at all. That works wonderfully driving from the ww rail, not so much when driving from the lw rail - the trav can be trimmed from the lw rail, but not eased.
If it's gusty, whether I use the trav or the sheet depends. If it's a quick dump like in an ease-hike-trim mode then I use the main sheet. If it's a smaller ease and likely to stay that way for a short while I'll use the trav. Mainly because the sheet is a larger dia than my trav and I like the feel better, but also because the main is 6:1.
Another vote for the windward sheeting traveler. I think its the best thing I've done on my boat. I think mine's the 2745 car with 2752 kit. You'll need the high beam track, or some other method to raise the track so the car will clear the cockpit seats, I think that's 2725. Then at the ends, 2740 end track. It's like the 'System 2' on this page: http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Harken/Harken-Trimming-Systems/Traveler.htm Actually, that may spec better part numbers. Looks like its showing the 2725 with the 2152 kit already on it. John
