The forecast winds for our Saturday race were 23 gusting to 30. I just wonder what the wind actually was. We definately had the hum going for a while, but I'm not sure how else I could gauge actual conditions. Maybe sailflow will still have history.
I've heard mine whistle (scream) in the upper twenties and above, and had mast-pumping in the high teens to low twenties... This will vary based on your rig tension--mine was pretty tight.
us too...high twenties w/ a pretty taut rig gets it humming...maybe that's the origin of 'humming along"??...have never seen/noticed mast-pumping though - I'm guessing it has something to do w/ harmonic vibrations?
I think it has everything to do with your particular rig--wire size, length, tension, etc. The "mast pumping" I can best describe as a thumping sound, maybe about 3 times per second. There are some articles describing the forces that generate this harmonic motion.
