My dacron jib has brown water stains (brown from iron?) that came from rainwater leaking into the boat and onto the sail stored over the winter... Looking for tips on how to clean this off. Can you? Thanks all!
Could be rust, or it could be from the plywood core or interior trim. At any rate, be very carful with what is probably dilute buffered or unbuffered oxalic acid and sailcloth.
I don't know why it would be iron... More likely it's from wood, either the deck core or some teak, such as the interior trim around the top of the hull against the underside of the deck--or it's just mildew. Every few years I took my sails to a loft with cleaning equipment and experts on repairs. They would point things out that they often suggested might as well be ignored in favor of later investing in a new sail. But if you're really interested in that furler (in your other thread), I'd hold off... and in any case not put acid on the sail.
Thanks gang; I think you're right about the stains coming from wood. I'm going to start by using a milder solution like Oxy-Clean. After seeing results, may move up to a bleach/detergent/water solution. THEN if still bad, my try the rust remover-very quickly. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Follow up and results: I cleaned the sail with Oxy-Clean - voila! Wonderful results, sail looks like new. Great product! No need for anything fancier (or harder, or more expensive!)
It's good to know that Oxy Clean worked well. When I used Whink I left it on for maybe 5 minutes then rinsed, rinsed, rinsed. No damage to the old sails at all, and they were used for a year after the cleaning.
