Anybody out there sail Lake Tahoe? If so how long is the sailing season and what is the weather like after mid October. I have to pull my boat out of a high mountain lake in Colorado in mid October and would like a late season option that would be in the west.
Thanks Ed, I found it on the map and it certainly looks like its lower in elevation and just one more pass west of Tahoe. Do you sail there? Can you recommend a marina for a temporary slip of maybe a couple weeks?
We keep our boat slipped a Bidwell Marina there also another Marina at the north end of the lake, but not as well suited for sailboats. There are a few slips I think available but better hurry. The Lake Oroville Yacht Club is very active in racing. The Chico Yacht Club is more in to cruising an trailer sailing. I believe the slips or by the day, mouth to mouth, or on a yearly contract. I know the slip next to me is open because I just acquired the Sabre 28 that was in it. Pulled out our C25 and moved the Sabre over in the C25s slip. I’ve been sailing here for three years and loving it. The water temp at 77 “Tahoe can’t beet that“. Bidwell Marinas office # (530) 589-9175 Good sailing.
Thanks for all the good information. If we head your way I'll let you know and maybe we can hook up. I did finally talk with someone at Lake Tahoe that sailed and they said the end of October is about it. After that you can get 6 foot rollers from the east wind and snow is always a possibility. Their season is just a bit longer than ours.
Dan, Tahoe sound nice I’d like to take the C25 there for a week or so, maybe next year. This years sort of booked all ready. In a few weeks were tailoring to the San Juan Islands one bold venture for this lake sailor. Currents and tides should it quite interesting. Fun stuff.
Smooth sailing on your trip to the NW. My wife grew up in Seattle and we get out there a few times a year. The San Juan Islands have always been on my bucket list to sail. If I trailer my boat up there I want it to be a one way trip. There are so many beautiful areas in the NW. Here in Colorado we get over 300 days of sunshine a year and I would welcome a little rain. I lived there back in the early 70's when I was in the Marine Corps and always wished I would have stayed. Will this be your first trip there or have you been before?
Dan, This San Juan Island trip started just about three years back. I had been looking for a Catalina 22 to learn to sail and eventually trailer sail. Then a flying buddy drug his extremely neglected Catalina 25, on a trailer that shouldn't have been allowed on the road, and parked it at the airport. Well it wasn’t long an a deal was struck and I drug her home. Bigger must be better “right” ? I must have been reading a magazine of some sort because, for our first road trip, sailing the San Juan’s became my goal from the start. I named her Two Port Feet because that’s the way I felt when I started the project. although After a few lessons and two racing seasons, mostly single handled, the confidence has built to where I feel in my comfort zone. The C25 SR/SK and trailer have been completely rebuilt including new sails an with a lot of the bells and whistles’. This will be the true test if the Wife an I. Can handle the confinement for a few weeks. Or will Two Port Feet become one of those great deals on Craig’s list ? It shoud be fun.
