Another outboard question. I have an old 1987 Evinrude 9.9 Yachtwin. Still runs good. The problems I have are these. I cannot figure out where to adjust the friction on the side to side steering. I cannot figure out how to adjust the friction on the tilt up. I'm not talking about the motor mount on the boat. I'm talking about the tilt up on the motor itself. When I put the engine in reverse, it wants to lift the prop out of the water - the tilt up problem. When I am motoring, I essentially want it to just point forward and for the most part it does. Put it also seems too easy to turn. I do not have the manual for this motor. Yeah, I could buy one, but I'm too cheap for the $35. Perhaps someone out there can help. Thanks

Ther eis a release on the stbd side of the engine of teh tilt - you have likely already found it.
If you over-rev the engine it can lift. Engage the reverse slowly and bring it to speed, adn it won't lift out of the water. If you are panicing. try to resist the urge to race the engine. It isn't doing you much good anyway.
You can always get the users guide from the manufacturers site that will give you a schematic. But it sounds like your outboard's lift leaver (mine's on the back left side of my Tohatsu) needs a lube and your steering cable is nicely lubed. If you've ever had a binding steering cable you know that your problem is what you wish for
If the outboard tilts up in reverse, the lock is not engaged properly, look up the part catalog at Crowley Marine and see if you reconize the various element of the locking system, it is part 92 on this diagram: http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/29518.cfm
