I went to the Cat 30 website in anticipation of my likely purchase. Wow. It is nothing like this. I don't want to leave even if I sell Pearl. I've known that this is a great place, but I had hoped it was a Catalina thing, not a C-25/250 thing. Their site is OK, but the people here and the structure provided by Paul make this a very special location.

Dave, I totally agree and this forum is why I bought my C250. I too checked out other sites and none even came close to ours. Thank our forefathers for creating such a place and the current members and officers for continuing to bring rich content and a warm place for owners to come and share their knowledge with others. The people here are genuinely the best bunch of guys and gals I have had the pleasure to know, even if only on a web site. But let me add I have met personally with about a half dozen of our members and they are as good as it gets as the most friendly, honest, caring human beings I have had the pleasure to meet. . I am certain that is true of the rest of those I have not yet had the pleasure to meet. Steve Auerbach, Treasurer.
Even when I had my C30 I came here because of the forum, the ease of use, the general sailing info, and the sailors. I was really disappointed with the 30 forum, just wasn't easy to follow the conversations. tom
Another nod to the folks in charge. This is a well done forum, and website, with teh store, tech tips, and magazine dovetailed nicely into the forum.
I moderate another forum on another topic that is the spawn of a poor administration not hearing what its membership needed, and then losing its entire membership to the nether regions of the www. Here we have folks who are aware, involved, adn participating. It makes a big difference.
There's a long list of people who have contributed greatly to making this site what it is, leading back to its beginnings as a sub-forum on Trailersailor.com. I'll mention a few whom I can credit as contributing to my decision 11 years ago to buy a C-25, and to my satisfaction with that decision: Bill "Bought Her from Myself" Holcomb, Arlyn "TX-250" Stewart, Leon "Better than Original" Sisson, Duane "Gearhead" Wolff, Steve "Barrister" Milby, Derek "No-fairsees" Crawford, Val "Dagnabit" Bisagni, Sten "Anchor Nazi" Hillman, Don "It's not Yay" Lucier, Frank "Bought Two" Hopper, Stu "34" Jackson, Brooke "Double-L" Willson, Jim "Smokey" Baumgart, Don "Say Amen" Peet, Frank "Margarita" Gloss,....... How do I stop?? Where do I stop?? OK, I'll stop.
It's not just knowledge--it's attitude. I began to suspect that, unlike the racing and cruising groups, the C-25 (and now the C-250 and CP-25) group wasn't trying to prove anything to anyone--their boats weren't big, fancy, or fast (except the Capris, and Derek)--they were just boats, for the enjoyment of sailing. Nobody was interested in one-upping anybody--just in helping, supporting, or simply welcoming.
When we bought Passage (an '85), the surveyor said that the lack of a "Catalina smile" suggested the boat was built in the Florida plant... I explained to him the change in the fin keel around '83... How do you suppose I knew about that??
When my wife was battling cancer in '03 and we lost in '04, this community was my refuge. As evidenced by the post count under my previous ID, it became a habit I have yet to break, even after joining the "Admiralty" and taking a more "appropriate" forum ID.
What they all said... it's true! Thank you, everyone!
Yup--the C-34 seems to have a good thing going, perhaps substantially due to Stu. Maybe he saw how good it could be (here), and decided to make it so elsewhere. Good on Stu!
BTW Stu--I couldn't find your membership list... Does the name Zipeto come up? They're good friends with a C-34-II, and longtime members of the Long Island Sound Catalina Association. Their path was Sunfish (mine), C-22, C-27, C-30, C-34. I take credit for initially teaching them to sail on that Sunfish! I'll ask them about your site...
Way back when I started looking for a boat among Cal24s, Cat25s, Capri25s and O'Days, it was this forum that helped me decide on the boat that I wanted.
Not only could I buy a boat through the Swap Meet, but I could also get personalized advice through the forum.
I saw Passage when Dave originally had it up for sale and another boat named "Puff", that was being sold by a pair of ministers from a local church.
When the gentleman who originally purchased Passage from Dave took ill, he also sought me out on this forum, and the rest was . . . destiny.

(...because they couldn't make it over the first afternoon she showed up on the Swap Meet.) It's fun to see the reaction when people see a boat that gleams inside and out and has all the major bases covered!
Bought my C25 #4488 in 2000, sold it in 2004 (on this forum) and stayed here for the very reasons noted above. Now I'm trying to sell my C320...on this forum.
Lots of good folks with good ideas here...size of the boat is irrelevant.
This forum, and all who contribute to organization, content and even "lurking" are a resource that few, if any other boats -- by any manufacture or any size or type -- can match. I had been active on the Cape Dory site, which is a little like this one, until a few years ago when they made it "exclusive". (Funny thing, I now own a C25 NOT a CD25!). If you go through the archives every possible topic -- from sailing through maintenance to local conditions - is covered with aplomb. I know some owners of other Catalina models and most have commented on how they "wish" their association was as active and ALL have commented that they follow us.
As said by many above, thanks for all past and present for this gem of a resource!

Dave,
Thanks, but it's NOT me, it's, like here, the entire group. I also believe it is the SOFTWARE that's being used. Both of our sites have user-friendly software for the Message Boards, although I do find the relative difficulty of posting pictures here somewhat limiting (i.e., links rather than uploads).
Our "membership list" is different, because we actually have two sorts: C34IA members and "respondents" on our Message Board. As C34IA Secretary, I keep the IA membership list on a File Maker Pro database, separate from the website Message Board. The "respondents" on the Message Board can be found there. Not all respondents are C34IA members.
Your friends don't sound familiar, but maybe they use different "handles" on the MB.
I've also helped Frank with his Ericson's engine and other systems.
Anyone thinking of moving up, please feel free to wander over to our website and poke around, we have, like here, over 20 years of collected material. Many folks say they bought their C34s because of the website. Like minds...
I also think that having an "open" site -- allowing non owners the same message access helps greatly in promoting the classes, enabling greater input, and encouraging past and future owners to be involved . . . .
I am honored to have been mentioned in the above company, and certainly don't deserve it.
I will give another shout out to Stu, who HAS helped me with my Ericson. He has even contacted me personally. the C-34 site is great, and if you ever move up you should seriously consider a C34, but only if you can't find an Ericson 32 they have lots of good info on Universal diesels.
I'm a big fan of the older Catalinas, they are meant to be sailed. If you go to the Annapolis show this year look at the new Catalinas. Dockside condos. No handholds if you actually have to venture down to the head while sailing and heeling. WTF?
